The Eye, N16's only major music venue, closed suddenly on 10 January. Ironically, on the very same day's issue of TNT Magazine it was selected for the pub review. In what is a positive article, the magazine said that the fruit machine is a 'bonus in a London pub' and The Eye is 'a champion of and up-and-coming artists'. And their verdict? 'Go see The Eye'. Owner Ged and licensee Tony told us that the bar was simply losing too much money and they had no option but to shut down. All is not lost, however. They are currently discussing various licensing and regulatory matters with Hackney Council and intend to re-open as a nightime venue by April, all being well. In the meanwhile, they are looking for music promoters for when the venue does re-open. Contact Ben, manager of Ryan's Bar on Church Street, if you are interested. We hope to publish an update in our forthcoming (March 19) issue.

Cafe Z Bar hosts live jazz - 'soulful underground grooves' - Friday 1 April, 8.30pm-midnight. Downstairs at the Z Bar, 58 Stoke Newington High Street, N16.

Free salsa lessons with Rodolfo on Mondays are probably good preparation for the salsa night on Fridays (9pm-2am, £2), which promises Nu Latin and Salsa Disco. Origin Blue on Wednesdays showcases new bands, and Saturday’s popular R&B night - Pure Talent - continues (9pm-2am, £4) (176 Stoke Newington High Street, N16 0207 275 8659).

The contemporary cabaret night (La Brasserie de Martyrs) continues in the cellar bar at Bodrum offering a platform for performers including poets, dancers, musicians and comedians, who don’t fit the usual mainstream venues, in an atmosphere of innovation and experimentation (61 Stoke Newington High Street N16, for details call 0207 241 3743).

Oxford Stage Company and Dumbfounded Theatre co-produce The Last Waltz season at the Arcola Theatre

3 plays, 16 actors, one extraordinary era

Musik by Frank Wedekind, directed by Deborah Bruce
Rose Bernd
by Gerhart Hauptmann, directed by Gari Jones
Professor Bernhardi
by Arthur Schnitzler, directed by Mark Rosenblatt

Oxford Stage Company and Dumbfounded Theatre are presenting The Last Waltz , a unique season of German plays at London's ground-breaking Arcola Theatre from 15 March – 7 May 2005 . This adventurous repertory season rediscovers three passionate classics by Wedekind, Hauptmann and Schnitzler, seen for the first time in London for almost 70 years.

Each play has been freshly translated by young British writers and will be directed by Deborah Bruce, Gari Jones and Mark Rosenblatt, all emerging directing talents. Performed by a strong ensemble of 16 actors including Lucy Briers, John Dougall, Roger Evans, John Lloyd Fillingham, Mariah Gale, Yvonne Gidden, Christopher Godwin, Jake Harders, Fred Pearson and John Stahl.

MUSIK

by Frank Wedekind
Translated and adapted by Neil Fleming, directed by Deborah Bruce
design by Jon Bausor, sound by Adrienne Quartly

Munich, 1906. Klara lives with her singing teacher and his wife. But when a backstreet abortionist is arrested, a secret emerges which threatens to destroy the household's respectability. Frank Wedekind was the great rebel of European theatre, best known for Spring Awakening and the Lulu plays. In Musik he unleashes a brilliant, blistering attack on middle-class hypocrisy and double-standards. This exhilarating adaptation by Neil Fleming, never before seen in London, opens The Last Waltz Season.

ROSE BERND

by Gerhart Hauptmann
new version by Dennis Kelly, directed by Gari Jones
design by Jon Bausor, sound by Adrienne Quartly

Silesia, 1903. Every man falls for Rose Bernd.  But her choices lead her into danger. In a deeply traditional community how can she avoid disgrace? Gerhart Hauptmann's compassionate but shocking account of a young woman's downfall is a European classic by a Nobel Prize-winning playwright. Rose Bernd
receives its British premiere in a searing new translation by playwright Dennis Kelly, whose work has been seen at Theatre 503 and the Royal National Theatre.

PROFESSOR BERNHARDI

by Arthur Schnitzler
new version by Samuel Adamson, directed by Mark Rosenblatt
design by Jon Bausor, sound by Adrienne Quartly

Vienna 1900. A Jewish doctor prevents a Catholic priest from absolving a dying patient. A witchhunt ensues. Arthur Schnitzler's work has come to define Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. Written in 1912, Professor Bernhardi
exposes the violent prejudices lurking beneath the city's glittering surface.  Schnitzler's “serious comedy”, in a spiky new version by Time Out Award-winning playwright Samuel Adamson, makes its first appearance in London since 1936 and is the Last Waltz Season's third and final production.

Continuing to build on its reputation for nurturing young directors and writers, Oxford Stage Company, whose world premiere of Americans at the Arcola was an outstanding success, joins forces with Dumbfounded Theatre to present what promises to be one of the theatrical highlights of 2005.

Danny Hurst and Janice Phayre are joining forces to host Comedy Candy , a mouth-watering new comedy night in Stoke Newington. A gob-stopping pick of headline acts, including Junior Simpson, Phil Nichol, Rob Deering and Jo Caulfied are mixed with the best up and coming sweeties including Russell Kane, Josie Long, Chris McCausland and Danielle Ward and are spilling themselves out for the lucky folk of Stoke Newington.

About Danny

Former circus performer Danny Hurst has performed in Edinburgh as a comic, actor, musician, dancer and street performer. This year, he will cycle there from London promoting his one man show for 2005. Danny has performed all over the world and is probably the only sexually dubious, orthodox Jewish, left handed, vegetarian and currently partially disabled Manchester City fan in comedy.

About Janice

Janice formed double act “Susan and Janice” with Susan Earl in 1999. They have taken four shows to Edinburgh and in 2002 toured Britain with their show “Out of Our Heads”. “…one of the finest shows from the Edinburgh Festival…magical…dovetails everything that's best about stand-up comedy and sit down drama… ” The Guardian. This year Janice was the runner-up in the “Funny Women” competition and reached the final of the “J20 Last Laugh Talent Hunt”.

Freq Presents: The Drones Club

The next Drones Club will take place in March 2005. Our home for the first five Drones Club events, The Eye in Stoke Newington has now closed its doors. We would like to thank the staff and management at The Eye for making us welcome there, particularly for the spectacular final gig (the last ever at the venue) on 8 January 2005 when a storming two hour-plus set to a packed venue from S/T brought proceedings to a close in fine ecstatic-psychedelic style, their set only terminated by equipment failure.

We think that S/T's reception was so good that, due to popular demand, we have invited them back to the Drones Club to support our special guest artist for the sixth event, Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots. Drones Club VI is on Friday March 18 at Barden's Boudoir, 38-44 Stoke Newington Road, London N16 7XJ. Other acts are to be confirmed, but there will be the usual Kosmische and ResonanceFM plus guest DJs on hand from 8pm until 3am. £6 on the door.

About The Drones Club

' We're pretty broad minded here, and if you stop short of smashing the piano, there isn't much you can do at the Drones that will cause the raised eyebrow and the sharp intake of breath.'
PG Wodehouse, Young Men In Spats

The Drones Club is home to harmonic drones and jollity of all stripes, inviting artists, performers and audience to participate in a world apart from mundanity. We prefer to think cosmically, and act musically. Or is it the other way around?

Not all the music played at The Drones Club is necessarily droney (though it might well be). Sometimes it is danceable, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes melodic, often harmonic. No-one has yet smashed a piano, at least not literally, but it might happen one day. Thankfully, the music and crowd at The Drones Club is rarely dull, and more often than not quite entertaining - as is only to be expected when the event is subtitled 'an evening of jollity, romance and harmonic drones'.

Previous performances at The Drones Club have included sets from Al the Megaphone Poet, Andrew Bailey, Brutality Of Screen, Disinformation vs SMDO, Mr. Fireman, Moonus (Groop), Morgan & Knight, Naked Goat, Nazarine, Now, S/T, Zali Krishna and the Stella Maris Drone Orchestra.

Resident and guest DJs are drawn from the Kosmische Club and Resonance FM, sometimes at the same time. Kosmische also has its own radio show every Tuesday night on 104.4FM in London, and streamed via the Resonance website worldwide. DJs can and will include Tango-Mango, Mink Pelican, Leo Avanti, Barry K and/or Jim Backhaus. There will usually be a venue-transforming psychedelic light show at The Drones Club courtesy of Lightning Rod.

Turkish Artists Exhibition At Abney Hall

Around 40 Turkish artists who are living and working abroad and from different backgrounds with diverse artistic milieus are gathering to show their works ranging from oil painting and water colours, to ceramics and photographs, all measuring 30x30cms, on 6 March 2005 at Abney Hall in the heart of Stoke Newington, London.

The exhibitors who are mainly from Paris, London and Berlin are professional artists; however, there is a small number of art students and new young artists among them.

The restricted size of the art works, 30x30, while being a transportable size and symbolic of the transitory aspect of living abroad, is also a challenge for the artists to express themselves in equally restrictive spaces as they may have experienced themselves at some time or another during their life abroad.

The exhibition will run until 18 March 2005, and can be viewed Mon-Fri, 1-6pm, by appointment. It will also be open to the public on 12 &13 March (Sat & Sun), 1-6pm.

Address: Abney Hall, 73, Stoke Newington Church Street, London N16 0AS

Telephone: 020 7923 9332

Selected Works by Robert Hind

Stoke Newington and Beyond, as it has never been seen before

Stoke Newington Library Gallery

just off Stoke Newington Church Street, London N16 0JS

opening night thursday 10 march 2005   6-8 pm

wednesday 9 - saturday 19 march

opening times:   monday to saturday 11-5 pm

Planet Stills photographer Robert Hind is having his first solo
exhibition in Stoke Newington. He has been working as a professional
photographer since 1994 and set up Planet Stills on Church Street
(opposite Fresh and Wild) towards the end of 2004 which specialises in
family portraiture and publicity photography. The title of the
exhibition 'Stoke Newington and Beyond' draws together past and present
Stoke Newington and works in three parts.

Firstly, there are contemporary colour portraits of Stoke Newington
inhabitants who have a connection with particular noted historical
counterparts. The historical figures include Olaudah Equiano (a slave
who bought his freedom), Mary Wollstonecraft (the mother of feminism),
George Leybourne (Champagne Charlie), Anna Sewell (writer of Black
Beauty), and Daniel Defoe (writer of Robinson Crusoe) amongst others.
All of these figures either lived in Stoke Newington or are buried in
Abney Park Cemetery. The portraits highlight the rich cultural
diversity that has always been present in Stoke Newington and emphasise
the uniqueness that makes it an inspiring community to live in.

Secondly, there is a selection of large black and white landscape
photographs printed onto stretched canvas. Many are taken in Stoke
Newington, while others are from over the border, for instance in
Lincolnshire and Scotland. These photographs highlight the Victorian
backdrop against which Stoke Newington residents live: time seems to
stand still in these pictures, and the streets and parks appear virtually
empty much as they might have been some 100 years ago.

The third part of the show highlights Robert Hind as an art
photographer. They deal with issues of being a man in the modern

world. As men we are encouraged to make logical decisions based upon
degrees of probability, we tend to value our thinking and distrust our
feelings. These black and white montage images suggest mythical stories
and inner feelings which offer an insight into the terror and wonder of
being a man. Linked to this part of the exhibition is a beguiling self
portrait as a phantasmagoria (a Victorian steam projection).

Opera and Ballet at the Empire

If you've never tried the Opera or Ballet then the Hackney Empire is inviting you to give it a go for just £5 a ticket.

The offer applies to the Hackney Empire's programme of the English Touring Opera's Cosi Fan Tutte and Mary Quee of Scots, and the Chisinau National Ballet's performance of Swan Lake.

The ticket offer is part of an initiative to encourage more people into local theatres and venues. The initiative has been operating since December last year and is supported by the Hackney Strategic Partnership (HSP). The participating theatres are the Hackney Empire, Arcola Theatre and Chats Palace.

The ticket offer is targeted at people who live and work in Hackney and who are first time bookers to participating theatres. Applications are particularly welcome from the following groups who are underrepresented in theatre audiences:

  • Children between 5 and 15 years (with a parent/carer)
  • Young people between 15 and 21 years
  • People on benefits or low income
  • Disabled people
  • Black or ethnic minority

It is hoped that the ticket offer will see theatres and venues gaining new audiences and more Hackney residents getting a better understanding of the cultural heritage within the borough. The participating theatres will collect monitoring information to assess how well the ticket offer is meeting its goals.

Since the ticket offer first became available at the beginning of the year, more than 2,500 people have been to the theatre.

By extending the offer to its opera and ballet seasons the Hackney Empire hopes many more will take up the offer.

“For many people going to the theatre is something which they don't even consider, however we want to change this and give people the chance to come and see what's on offer.  Drama, music, comedy and dance are being including in this scheme, so we hope that there will be something for everyone and that they will return to the theatre again and again”.
Roland Muldoon Artistic Director, Hackney Empire

Mary, Queen of Scots: English Touring Opera

English Touring Opera's new production of Mary, Queen of Scots opens at Hackney Empire on 11 March. Directed by ETO general director James Conway, whose A Midsummer Night's Dream was rapturously received last year, the opera culminates in a dramatic confrontation between the two women that is historicallyinaccurate but theatrical dynamite. It will be the first time the opera has been performed at many of the venues ETO is touring to, as the showy vocal writing requires two exceptional female leads. Anne Mason and Jennifer Rhys Davis are ably equipped to take up the challenge, conducted by Noel Davies, whose experience includes performances at the Royal Opera House and the New York Metropolitan.

7.30 pm, 11 March, Hackney Empire, £10 - £27.50. Box office 020 8985 2424.

For more information, contact Andrew Higgins, ETO Marketing Manager, on andrew.higgins@englishtouringopera.org.uk or phone 020 7833 2555. ETO, 52-54 Roseberry Avenue, EC1R 4R
