SINGING IN THE RAIN

p14.jpg (3276 bytes)Well, here we go again. You look at my picture and wonder why I am stumbling around the cat-flaps of Stokey when I’m more than qualified to be saucing it up around the catwalks of Milan. I understand your concern and I thank you. It seems that the tuned-in bosses of N16 magazine have also been caught up in this wave of public sympathy towards me and decided to give me a regular column, so the Italians are gonna have to come up with a better offer than a can of cider and a saveloy if they want to tempt me away.

Well, the Street Festival this year - did you go? Did you really like it? Did you think it was wicked? Did you get wet? I think having the stages in the park this year, was a great idea and towards the evening, when the sun came out, it started getting really ‘vibey and ‘happening’. It’s just a real shame that the early part of the day was so wet and miserable.

I think there are people to blame for this. The Festival Organisers. I feel they have let us down by not being able to secure or guarantee the sunshine this year. The Monaco Grand Prix manages to secure it every year, so why can’t we? If it’s a financial problem then why don’t we lose a few ‘arty’ things and pour the money into the Sunshine fund instead. The reason why Glastonbury was off this year is not because of crowd control - no, that was just a smoke-screen - it was because he couldn’t secure the sunshine for the third year in a row.

Maybe we should strike a deal with The Big FeIla Upstairs early on in the year, you know, promise to have a few ‘churchy’ things happening, even a couple of gospel bands on the main stage, as long as He guarantees us sunshine on the day. Definitely something to consider for next year.

Surely one of the highlights of the day was Stokey’s very own Northern Soul band The Soulwinners, who, despite the rain, turned in a sterling performance on the main stage. Even though there were only about a hundred people there, it will be talked about so richly that in a few years time at least a thousand will claim to have been there. Rather like The Sex Pistols at Screen on the Green or The Stone Roses at Dingwalls. I was at both of those gigs, by the way.

A big THANK YOU to all the bands that performed that day, especially on the new band stage, who were all really good, a lot better than people were expecting. My personal faves were The Redlands Palamino Co., who are on the Gram Parsons! Rockingbirds trip, Moses, who are all acoustic and caustic and lovely and Credit who are quite unique and did a grand job of headlining.

I also managed to catch on Church Street the Emma Peel Fan Club who are great for that early evening, slightly intoxicated rock and roll vibe; not so great if you are trying to put the little fella to bed in the flat opposite the stage. Cheers ladies, a little consideration next time! So remember to support your local music scene with a vengeance and keep sending in your tapes/CDs for a review. If you want a nice one, remember to send some money with it.

Take good care now.

Mathew is the drummer with Dodgy and, ahem, the Soulwinners. Dodgy’s new album - Real Estate - is out now. Check out their website www.dodgy.co.uk for further information.
