| . | Want to take part in the Notting Hill Carnival? Theres a joint initiative between Chats Palace and Homerton Grove Adventure Playground to provide Mas Camp workshops to prepare for this years Notting Hill Carnival Childrens Day on August Bank Holiday. Homerton Palace Mas Camp has been running for over 10 years, taking a Mas Band in full theme costumes, with banners and other decorative pieces. This years theme is exotics. The club runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays and weekend sessions are planned. The price for children is £20 (discounts for families) and covers all the workshops, materials and costume, plus travel on the day and refreshments. For older kids (16+) Hackney Colleges Asian and Oriental School of Catering is running one-day courses this summer at the Shoreditch Campus in Falkirk St, N1. On offer are courses on Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, Asian and Oriental Spices, Personal Effectiveness, Emergency First Aid and Work Tasters. Courses cost £35. Theres also a Summer School at the same College campus for Speakers of Other Languages and components include basic reading, writing and speaking, computing, maths, drama, films, and sport. The Museum is running three weeks of workshops for children looking at how moving objects work inside and outside the home. How movement affects the look and performance of objects such as clocks, wind chimes and windmills will be explored. The weeks will run from Tuesday 31 July to Friday 3 August and Tuesday 7 August to Friday 10 August, 10.30 am-12.3Opm and 2.00- 400pm. From Tuesday 14 August to Friday 17 August there will be drop-in sessions. Its free for individuals and families. An adult must accompany children under 8 years old. Places are allocated on first-come, first-served basis 30 minutes in advance of the workshop (except for the drop-in sessions). Quizzes are also available all day in the museum. Throughout the summer to the end of August the National Museum of Childhood will be running A Childrens Midsummer Nights Dream that contains all the magic of the new film featuring a cast of Southwark schoolchildren. The Museum will recreate a child-sized woodland glade, complete with fountain. Original costumes, scenery and puppets are displayed alongside the story behind the making of the film. There are weekend and holiday costume workshops for children aged three and over throughout the period of the exhibition. In addition, from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 July, as part of Japan 2001, theres a hands-on event for children to experience both Japanese and British traditional outdoor games. Organised by the Japan Youth Friendship Association in collaboration with the Museum, 20 Japanese children between ten and 15 years of age and five Japanese instructors will demonstrate games such as Bamboo Spinning, Stone Hitting, Bean bags and Hopscotch. And there, I thought hopscotch was British. It is hoped that British kids attending will be able to demonstrate our own favourite outdoor activities. To book call Alison Jones on 8983 5205. Address: Cambridge Heath Road, E2 The Rio is running Summer Holiday Matinees and from Friday 20 July to Thursday 2 Aug they have Shrek, a computer-animated fairytale that tells the story of a giant ogre. This is followed on Friday 3 August to Thursday 16 August by Cats and Dogs. The Rio also has its Saturday Morning Picture Club (children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult). Membership is free, theres a free admittance after every 10 visits and a free poster after 25 visits. All performances start at 11 .00am. The Rios Playcentre Matinees are on Tuesdays at 415pm and coming up on 17 July theres Tintin and the Mystery of Shark Island (for the Picture Club and Playcentre Matinees the prices are £2.00 for children and £3 accompanying adults). Sutton House have organised two special week-long art and drama history projects for children that culminate in a performance on Sutton Houses regular monthly Discovery Day - a free family day open to all. The first is Summer Blooms providing the experience of how summers were spent and what gardening was like in the Tudor period. This runs from Monday 23 July to Friday 27 July with a performance day on Sunday 29 July, 10.30am-3.30pm daily (finishes 12.30pm Friday 27 July). In August children can discover what it was like to be a rich or poor child in Tudor and Victorian times in Seeing and Hearing Children. This will run from Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August inclusive, 10.30am to 3.30pm. Performance day on the free Discovery Day Sunday 26 August.
