SCHOOL'S OUT... FOR SUMMER

.
.

Want to take part in the Notting Hill Carnival? There’s a joint initiative between Chat’s Palace and Homerton Grove Adventure Playground to provide Mas Camp workshops to prepare for this year’s Notting Hill Carnival Children’s Day on August Bank Holiday. Homerton Palace Mas Camp has been running for over 10 years, taking a Mas Band in full theme costumes, with banners and other decorative pieces. This year’s theme is ‘exotics’. The club runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays and weekend sessions are planned. The price for children is £20 (discounts for families) and covers all the workshops, materials and costume, plus travel on the day and refreshments. For more details ring Chat’s Palace on 020 8986 6714.

For older kids (16+) Hackney College’s Asian and Oriental School of Catering is running one-day courses this summer at the Shoreditch Campus in Falkirk St, N1. On offer are courses on Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, Asian and Oriental Spices, Personal Effectiveness, Emergency First Aid and Work Tasters. Courses cost £35. For more information call John or Ethlyne on 020 7613 9292. There’s also a Summer School at the same College campus for Speakers of Other Languages and components include basic reading, writing and speaking, computing, maths, drama, films, and sport. There’s personal tutor support and the cost is £10. Phone Rashida on 020 7613 9439 or Camilla on 020 7613 9189.

‘Move It’ on down to the Geffrye Museum. The Museum is running three weeks of workshops for children looking at how moving objects work inside and outside the home. How movement affects the look and performance of objects such as clocks, wind chimes and windmills will be explored. The weeks will run from Tuesday 31 July to Friday 3 August and Tuesday 7 August to Friday 10 August, 10.30 am-12.3Opm and 2.00- 400pm. From Tuesday 14 August to Friday 17 August there will be drop-in sessions. It’s free for individuals and families. An adult must accompany children under 8 years old. Places are allocated on first-come, first-served basis 30 minutes in advance of the workshop (except for the drop-in sessions). Quizzes are also available all day in the museum.

Throughout the summer to the end of August the National Museum of Childhood will be running A Children’s Midsummer Night’s Dream that contains all the magic of the new film featuring a cast of Southwark schoolchildren. The Museum will recreate a child-sized woodland glade, complete with fountain. Original costumes, scenery and puppets are displayed alongside the story behind the making of the film. There are weekend and holiday costume workshops for children aged three and over throughout the period of the exhibition.

In addition, from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 July, as part of Japan 2001, there’s a hands-on event for children to experience both Japanese and British traditional outdoor games. Organised by the Japan Youth Friendship Association in collaboration with the Museum, 20 Japanese children between ten and 15 years of age and five Japanese instructors will demonstrate games such as Bamboo Spinning, Stone Hitting, Bean bags and Hopscotch. And there, I thought hopscotch was British. It is hoped that British kids attending will be able to demonstrate our own favourite outdoor activities. To book call Alison Jones on 8983 5205. For information check out their website: www.museumofchildhood.org.uk  or phone 020 8980 2415. All events are free. Address: Cambridge Heath Road, E2
