Ryan's Bar is host to some interesting art exhibitions. Throughout
October, there is a display of Dennis Austin's jazz and blues photographs from virtual
unknowns to BB King. Dennis has been a photographer and saxaphonist for over thirty-five
years and he is also head of the Clerkenwell Society. In November, Pam Elgar will be
showing her work. Pam is an East London, mainly abstract, artist working in acrylic and
oil.
The Fox Reformed is hosting another of its regular art exhibitions.
Currently on display are the contemporary photographs of Jens Lucking, whose prizewinning
work has been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery.
The Kiosk Project, a gallery recently opened at 55 Kyriaston Road, is
showing large scale drawings and sculptures by Denmark's Trine Olrik. The exhibition runs
till the end of October. The gallery intends to mount a full programme throughout the
coming year, including film, drawing, sculpture, art and architecture. For more

Hidden Art on the map again. 1994 saw the initiation of a small open
studio weekend that promoted the work of 43 Hackney designer-makers. Now in its eighth
year, Hidden Art has expanded into a network that supports and promotes over 850
designer-makers and includes training, networking events and other showcasing
opportunities. This year's open studio weekends will include the Thames Gateway, Lee
Valley and City fringe areas. The organisers claim that the upcoming annual open weekends
will be 'Europe's leading open studios event'.
Apart from Hidden Art's famous map, a very successful feature of the event is the
opportunity to travel by narrow boat on East London's historic Regent's Canal visiting
studios along the way. If you are more pressed for time you can see the work of over 40
designer-makers from the Thames Gateway area at Hidden Art's design fair in Mile End
Park's Arts Pavilion.
Expediently timed for the Xmas present buying season, Hidden Art provides an ideal
opportunity to buy or commission from local designer-makers at a discount prices. A
participating artist, textile designer Cressida Bell, says 'The nicest thing about
participating in Hidden Art is that people love to see the studios and get an insight into
how you work.' However she does recommend a bit of planning and suggests looking at the
designers' websites in advance to choose which ones you want to see. You can do this by
looking at the Hidden Art web portal www.hiddenart.com
to which all the participating artists are linked.
Hidden art will be held on the weekends of 24/25 November 10 am to 6 pm and 1/2 December
12 noon to 6 pm. For more information or to obtain a free map, which will be available
from the end of October, call the Hidden Art boiling on 020 7729 3301 or email info@hiddenart.co.uk
