HACKNEY NOT FOR SALE

N16 asked Hackney Not 4 Sale to write an article explaining what they're about.

Hackney Not 4 Sale is a group of people with one thing in common - to save Hackney for the people of Hackney. We have no political affiliation and wave no banners. We have joined together to alert the public to what is happening in Hackney. We feel the Council is draining the lifeblood of the borough.

Thanks to years of mismanagement and corruption, Hackney is deeply in debt Every year it must hand over £70m in interest on its debt of £750m. Its current budget of £240m per annum must be reduced by £75m over the next three years. This financial year, it is projected there will be an added deficit of between £13 -£21m making the Council technically bankrupt. The government has ordered Hackney to put its house in order. To do this, the Council is slashing and cutting wherever it can.

We stand against the loss of jobs, the lowering of wages, the service cuts, the privatisation of services, the cutting of grants to community groups and the selling off of Council properties without consultation. We feel that we the workers and residents of Hackney are better placed to decide what happens in our borough.

So much is happening in Hackney now that directly affects the lives of every resident. But it is not easy to get the facts. Hackney, either by design or inefficiency, is extraordinarily secretive. Those who work for the Council know what threatens them. Those whose houses are pulled down for smart flats know. Those whose building premises are sold know. But who knows what is planned in the future? If we pool all the knowledge we have, we can act together on it. We can stop further damage to our community. With our newsletter we hope that other groups will keep us informed of what is happening to them.

We aim to raise awareness, to mobilise and encourage workers and residents to take direct action where necessary. We regularly picket the Town Hall when cuts are being discussed at Council meetings, We squatted Atherden Road Nursery and ran it as a community centre. We squatted an empty shop and opened a spoof estate agency to highlight the selling of Council properties. We occupied the offices of Nelson Bakewell and later disrupted their auction We circulate a newsletter sharing all information we can gather on what is happening in Hackney

Hackney is a diverse and rich community. It is an exciting and exhilarating place to live and work. Hackney Council is busy wrecking for our children and for our grandchildren. We need to do it now before it is too late.
