RUMOURS, MYTHS & MAGIC

by Mike Roberts

There have been many rumours circulating about this years Stoke Newington Festival, almost all of them false.

Rumour: This years festival is cancelled.
Fact: A big resounding NO. This year's festival will run from Friday 14 June until Sunday 23 June, with one final event the following Sunday evening.

Rumour: There is no Street Festival.
Fact: This is true. The Festival has had to pull the Street Festival because of late funding advice from the Council. However, it will return next year to mark the Festival's tenth anniversary. And so Church Street will not be closed this year - instead a number of events will happen along Church Street. The programme is still being finalised but N16 has had an exclusive opportunity to see the diary. And we can confirm that although this year's Fest is smaller than for a number of years the quality is still there. Many of the classic components are firmly fixed in the events listing. So have no fear that the regular jewels in the crown have been lost.

Rumour: It's just for Church Street.
Fact: It is called The Stoke Newington Festival and this year will see events right across the Stoke Newington area.

Rumour: Oh, the Festival has nothing to offer me.
Fact: This year's Festival diary contains one of the most diverse set of events seen over the past nine years. With performers from around the world, covering music, performance art, the spoken and written word and special commissions, this year's events promise a rich and varied experience. Whatever your age or background, there is certain to be something for you. The Stoke Newington Festival was last year voted one of the best festivals in the country and, by the looks of the programme, they plan to keep it at its best.
