Do you ever find yourself thinking that there is nothing new or interesting out on the
web these days? I know that I sometimes think why bother, and then I discover a gem that
keeps me going. One such site that has really caught my attention is www.fathom.com which offers a huge range of online
learning courses, many of which are free, the rest costing $45. Yes I know that this is
supposed to be about Stoke Newington, but one course in particular that attracted my
attention was 'Poverty, Wealth and History in the East End of London: Life and Work'
taught by Professor Paul Johnson, London School of Economics and Political Science.
This e-course is the first of two in which he explores the rich and dramatic history of
the East End of London. Through images, maps, video, eyewitness testimony and critical
examination of original sources, you will gain a comprehensive
understanding of one of Britain's legendary areas. Using Spitalfields, a historic corner
of the East End, as a window onto the history of social and economic change you will learn
about the great surges of immigration from Ireland, Eastern Europe and Bangladesh; the
creation, destruction and re-creation of tightly knit communities; labour and toil in one
of the poorest and most restive districts of London; and the religious, political and
social fault lines that divided and defined British society. Much of the course provides
many clues to the development of Stoke Newington, is well worth the effort, and only takes
about 5 or 6 hours of your time. It comes with a mass of material for you to download.
The second site to have caught my attention is www.map.hackney.gov.uk . If you
need statistical information on your local area, there is a mass of detail for you here.
For example, you can see how many people own cars in a particular ward and the maps, by
the way, use the new ward layout. So gone are the likes of North and South Defoe to be
replaced with an enlarged Clissold ward and the new Stoke Newington Central ward. My only
concern for both the above sites is that a decent sized monitor is needed to get the best
out of them.
In the past I have commented on two local school sites, Stoke Newington School Media Arts
College www.sns.hackney.sch.uk
and William Patten Primary www.williampatten.hackney.sch.uk
. Well, I am pleased to report the rapid improvement in both of them and we wish them
continued growth. When I originally visited the William Patten site they had an
interesting but slow guide to Church Street. This has now gone and been replaced by a full
school site. I hope that one day they will be able to redo the Church Street pages
because, although slow, it was a great way to discover some of the history of the area.
Having fed the mind, it's now time to work out the body. Here is a selection of sporting
and keep fit websites in the area:
Climbing The Castle Climbing Centre www.castle-climbing.co.uk
has one of the best climbing walls in the UK and the site has details about
climbing around the world.
Sailing Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre www.west-reservoir.co.uk
. Currently this site is non-operational except for the front page, but it hopes to be
back on line during the spring. It does have the address and phone number a wonderful
place to sail.
Capital Sailing www.CapitalSailing.com
is a Stoke Newington-based Royal Yachting Association Sea School that teaches
navigation, radio and first aid. They run practical courses on yachting on their own 38
foot yacht on the Solent and offer twilight sailing in Docklands.
Scuba Diving Triton Diving www.triton-diving.co.uk
is a leading North London scuba diving school and Five Star Diving is a scuba club and
school www.fivestarstardiving.co.uk run by Stoke Newington folk.
Yoga The Yogahome site www.yogahome.co.uk
gives full details of classes and prices. Moving East www.movingeast.co.uk is a centre
for dance, martial arts and complementary medicine in Stoke Newington. Plain site but
plenty of info about classes and how to get there.
Women Only Sunstone www.sunstonewomen.com
has a very professional site. I was impressed with the detailed workout planners.
Adam Neilson, a local resident, has recently been in contact with me regarding creating a
community broadband wireless Internet access service for our area. These 'freenets' have
been springing up across the globe and provide a service that is good for the residents,
local businesses, schools and municipal buildings. In short, the IEEE 802.11 WLAN
technology enables 1 - 11 Mbps Internet access wirelessly to any laptop or desktop
computer that is armed with 'WIFI' hardware within broadcast range. They are inexpensive
to set up and easy for users to access. Would broadband internet access interest you?
Would it interest you more if it were free? What, then, if you could access it in your
local pub or cafe? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are talking free community wireless
networks. Information on freenets can be found on www.wlan2.dabsol.co.uk/page2.html
. If you are interested please drop us a line at info@n16mag.com.
