August is a quiet month for the local music scene, with the Minx Club shut down for holidays and the Vortex restricting itself to only two gigs per week, on Friday and Saturday throughout the month, The Tup, also, has postponed its regular 'accoustician' evenings until September.

Ryan's however, continues to buck the trend with a free acoustic night on the 14th and an Improvisational jazz night with Flim Flam on the 21st and 28th (entry £4). The Parlour Band present their blend of cajun and country on the 24th, entry free. There is a comedy evening on the 7th and every Thursday the downstairs room is taken over by 'groove-o-rama playing a 'frightfully good mix of rock, lounge, disco dance and old rope' again free admittance. You'll find regular DJ nights at the revamped Londesborough (a splendid building) and the Birdcage, and also at the White Hart where old school funk is the order of the day on Wednesdays, Steve Procter on Thursdays and needle2needle/Warren on Fridays and Saturdays.

Barracuda has John Miller and Friends, a regular Friday night slot although owner Teng is resting his Sunday night jazz evenings for the summer, As for the Bar Lorca there is music on most evenings but we haven't enough space to list it here. Pick up a programme when you're next enjoying your Rioja and paella. Clicia has just launched a regular, Sunday evening Turkish acoustic session, while Firefly is hosting young steel bands on alternate Sunday afternoons.

Krystal's has its usual varied programme, including the Diva of DaIston, Miss Demeanour, entertaining every Friday with songs and games. On 3 August there is a drag cabaret with the outrageous Sandra, on 10 August a double comedy bill with Jimmy Troillette and the Duchess, on 17 August the Brighton Bell, Lola Lasagna, comes to town and on 24 August there is the voice of Michael Dalton. The monthly Glee Club, a free monthly comedy night, takes place on 15 August, Cabaret at 10pm comedy at 9pm. Ring 020 7254 1967 for details.

The truncated programme at the Vortex offers the following line up: 2 August, Antonio Forcione 3 August, Barb Juner; 4 August, Sonny Mann's Chapel of Karaoke; 9 August, Anita Wardell Quartet 10 August Christine Tobin and Estelle Kokot; 16 August, Liane Carroll; 17 August, John Etheridge Trio; 23 August, Jamie Cullum; 24 August, As Meninas; 25 August, Sonnie Mann; 30 August, Carol Grimes Band 31 August, Jaqueline Dankworth Trio. Phone 020 7254 6516 for times and prices,

The Auld Shillelagh, meanwhile, continues to plot its own musical directions with increasing success, On 2 & 16 August the Other Brothers play great foot tapping Irish and Traditional American music. 11 August is The Green Room - Music for Resting Actors & Actresses, Peel Me A Grape follows on 25 August, and Democracy Be your own DJ. Bring 5 Tracks and share your music with the world is also scheduled for August. An Evening With Dino a Dean Martin celebration - on 15 August is a worthy successor to Frank Sinatra.

Meanwhile, down at the 0cean in Mere Street the legendary Dionne Warwick is making a rare British appearance on 30 July (£25), while the venue celebrates Jamaica's 40th year of independence with a three night extravaganza including a Lovers, Rock and Culture night and a Reggae and Dancehall night, Tickets am £28 3 to 5 August.

Alternatively why not nip into Flowers N16 and listen to Errol's golden baritone accompany Van Morrison on 'Into the Mystic'? A rare treat.
