YUM,YUM, Yum...

'He ate with
relish! Triumph.'

Tamara Cruet

To a despairing world, it is with great sadness that I have to announce that the Ladies Who Lunch have been forced to disband - due to one of them buggering off to a new life in Spain. Cow. However, I am proud to announce that I have now been effectively rebranded as: the Lady Who Lunches.

For my first solo appearance, I decided to pick a rank amateur companion (the Husband) and force feed him at one of Church Street's deservedly best known eateries: the Thai restaurant, Yum Yum. The Husband's been known to whimper at anything more exotic than bacon and eggs or chip butties. How did he fare?

We started with my favourites, which I've found to be an effective ploy when dining with no-brainers. Kanom Pang Nah Kai (lovely melt-in-the mouth nibbles of minced chicken marinaded with herbs and served on toast) and Toong Tang, or Thai Gold Bags (little parcels of deep-fried beancurd skins filled with chicken, prawns and mushroom, served with a plum sauce). He ate them with relish! Triumph.

Then we moved on to Goong Tod Gratiam Prik-Tai - prawns with garlic and peppers and Kai Prew Wan, a mellow stir-fry of chicken with sweet and sour sauce, tomato and cucumber and a lethal chilli dip, to be treated with the utmost respect. Husband needed a knife to cope with the prawns, but cope he did, while I greatly enjoyed the chicken - Thai sweet and sour isn't as cloying as its Chinese counterpart and it's altogether cleaner tasting. My only quibble: was the pineapple really necessary? A single serving of coconut rice provided ample ballast washed down with a crisp Chilean Sauvignon Blanc from Yum Yum's excellent wine list.

England v Denmark - The Tup

The minor disappointment arrived only with the pudding: the Thai classic, kulfi, served with a completely unnecessary dollop of pancake. Leave the kulfi alone, say I - its splendour should be solitary.

Overall, a fine meal in a restaurant that clearly continues to be hugely popular with the locals - on the otherwise quiet Monday we were there, the place was heaving by the time we left.
