After the critical and commercial success of Crime and Punishment in Dalston,
the Arcola Theatre continues with its production of hard-hitting drama
dealing with issues of direct relevance to the local multicultural community. Playing
until 17 August is the English Language World Premiere of Koffi Kwahule's Bintou, an
ensemble piece about a 13year-old girl running wild on the streets of Paris and the
extreme reaction to her behaviour from her traditional African family. The play is staged
at 8pm, Monday-Saturday, with tickets at £10, £6 (cones) and pay what you can on
Tuesday. The Arcola's cafe bar is a pleasant place to hang out and enjoy drinks and hot
and cold food, and they have a good selection of newspapers and magazines. They also
present live music - jazz, folk, cabaret and Turkish music on Friday and Saturday after
the shows. The Arcola is at 27 Arcola street, box office 020 7503 1646.
The Rio Cinema has a mainly family-oriented month in August. Between 1
and 15 August the programme begins with Stuart Little 2 (U), 'for children of all ages',
on at 11 am and the rest of the day/evening shows Men in Black 11 (PG), with Will Smith
and Tommy Lee Jones again saving the planet from undesirable Allens. Between 16 and 22
August there is Scooby Doo (U), with showings between 1 am and 4.15pm and the evenings are
devoted to Lost in La Mancha (15) and The Girl From Paris (15). From 23 August till the
end of the month there is the kids' animation feature Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron (U)
at 1.15pm daily, while the Spanish subtitles love story Talk to Her (15) takes over the
rest of the day. For further information contact the Rio on 020 7241 9410.
If you'd prefer something less sedentary, and want to keep the kids amused, then visit the
Geffrye Museum in Shoreditch. The Museum is hosting two weeks of summer
holiday workshops exploring trees, wood, bees and the Geffrye's gardens, including the
herb garden. Sculpture making, wood carving and designing a tree house will keep the
little darlings' minds occupied and give you a bit of peace. 30 July - 2 August and 6
August - 9 August, 10.30am 12.30pm and 2.00pm - 4.00pm. They're also holding a Special
Summer Sunday - with a range of activities and events on 11 August, noon - 5pm. Kingsland
Road, E2 8EA, 020 7739 9893.
On the local arts
front, Jennie Harding has an exhibition of Abstract Water Colours at Ryan's
during August, while Firefly has just mounted a series of fascinating
photographs of Cuba in the bar. Meanwhile at the Kiosk Project on
Kynaston Road Maria von Kohler (Royal Academy Schools) has installed a crash barrier
scaled up from its Scalextrics origins to 'life size'. Traversing the entire gallery, the
barrier blocks off an empty space and an empty wall, acting as a restrictive device,
limiting access and leaving the viewer with almost nowhere to go. Viewable from the street
or by appointment. Phone Regitze on 020 7249 0072 or www.thekioskproject.com
