Firefly Rhum Shack, 18 Stoke Newington Church St Tel: 020 7254 2300. A cool cocktail bar recently carved out of what was formerly a launderette. Unbeatable range of rums plus the wherewithal to produce almost any cocktail you could care to mention. Open from 5pm weekdays, noon weekends.

Rochester Castle, 145 Stoke Newington High St N1 6 ONYTel: 020 7249 6016. Huge Wetherspoons pub, offers the cheapest drinks for miles. Recently redecorated. Extensive collection of real ales, with regular beer festivals. Food, garden, kids until 7pm. Open Sun-Thur, 11am-10.0, FriSat, 11am-11 pm.

Rose & Crown, 199 Stoke Newington Church St N 16 9ES Tel: 020 7254 7497. A well-established local. There has been a Rose and Crown on this site for centuries. The present pub was built in the 1930s and has remained true to its roots with stone floor and original glass and wood panelling. A good range of real beers and well-chosen wine list. Weekday lunches and Sunday roasts are Stoke Newington favourites. Kids until early evening.

Yucatan Bar 121, Stoke Newington Rd N16 8BT Tel: 020 7254 6198. Large establishment with plenty of screens showing sporting events and separate pool room. Normal hours. Outdoor seating on High Street.

Wheatsheaf, 6 Windus Rd N16 Tel: 0208 806 397. Pleasant, old-fashioned bar in Stamford Hill. Food lunch time, pool, great juke box. Normal hours.

White Hart, Stoke Newington High Stl\116Tel: 0207 254 6266. Recently refurbished spacious bar with large beer garden. Comfortable seating. Giant TV screen. Real ale, no food. Live music and DJs Thur-Sun. Normal hours.

Anchor & Hope, 15 High Hill Ferry E5 020 8806 1730. Situated on the River Lee this small bar is a hidden treasure, a real local community pub. A good excuse to plan a leisurely stroll along the tow path. Real ale, TV, normal opening hours, closed 3-5pm week days.

Amhurst, 240 Arnhurst Road E8 Tel: 020 7254 6410. Recently revamped local pub now elegant and affordable tapas bar. Good wine list and beer/lager selection, TV. Normal opening hours.

Brownswood Park Tavern, 271 Green Lanes N4 Tel: 020 8809 2846. Close to Clissold Park and the Climbing Centre. Recommended menu. A great excuse for a walk across the park. Food, beer garden, darts, TVs. Normal opening hours.

Cava Bar, 11 Albion Road, Newington Green N16 9PS Tel: 020 7923 9227. Recently-opened, well placed to serve the residents on the southern fringe of N16. Bright, well-designed interior overlooking Newington Green. Food, Sunny court yard. Open Mon Wed 4pm, Thur - Sun 10am.
