Garden centres and flower shops can provide
imaginative alternatives for present hunting, and this Christmas they promise to entice
even people who aren't habitual customers. Apart from the enormous range of Xmas trees in
many different sizes (from small to very heavy) and varieties (non-drop or traditional) in
pots or blocked, there will be great surprises in stock.
The energetic and extremely helpful Yannik is fast transforming the previously traditional
image of Joanne's Plantique. He offers pre-decorated trees in five different styles,
viewable from 1 December on the Internet ( www.joannes.co.uk
). Also Christmas wreaths in dramatic colours (from £ 29.95 upwards) created to last
throughout the festive season and always a welcome gift, as are the special hampers (ready
made or to order) and the individually designed Christmas arrangements or bouquets. A wide
range of clear glass vases to suit any interior is now accompanied by many unusual
terracotta containers in contemporary 'rustic chic' style of Danish and Copenhagen design:
planters, vases, ashtrays or simply decorative objects which can be at home anywhere.
Green fingered friends will love a white or pink moth orchid (Phalenopsis hybrid, usually
around £22) as it takes a very small amount of space and is relatively easy to care for
provided a few ground rules are strictly observed. (It will need a bright spot but without
direct sunlight in summer. It should be watered only in the morning, holding it over the
sink and letting water trickle trough the base of the pot without wetting the leaves. Do
this less frequently in winter and never allow water to settle in the centre of the plant
and remain overnight, as this causes fatal rotting.)

John's Garden Centre will have a wide range of the red flowered Xmas rose
(Poinsettia). It's a cheerful and less long term present as it is generally discarded
after the red bracts disappear, since it's almost impossible to induce it to flower again
in average house conditions. This year some of the novelty colours (white, peach) might
become available. Of general interest are many traditional gardening tools, Chinese
outdoor fireplaces (£99.99), terracotta pots and troughs, Maglite torches and Swiss Army
knives.
Flowers N16 ( www.flowersn16.com
) will have a selection of evergreen wreaths (holly, mistletoe, pine and more) and
decorated trees (dried flowers, artificial or real fruit), also dried or fresh
arrangements for table decoration (with or without candles), sparkling branches in gold or
silver (contorted willow, hazel, birch), and an interesting range of glass vases and
containers, some pre-planted with spring flowering bulbs.
For gardening friends the well-stocked section in The Stoke Newington Bookshop offers a
good selection, but it is easy to order specific volumes. Propagation Basics (by Steven
Bradley, £12.99) will become an essential reference to be consulted time and time again,
while The Plants that Shaped our Gardens (by David Stuart, £25) is an elegantly written
book with excellent illustrations, detailing important plant introductions. The style is
informative and entertaining and will increase awareness of where the plants that shape
our gardens have come from. The anecdotal stories and the wonderful tales of the plant
collectors should make great winter reading for anyone.
