Don't miss the N16 fringeStokey band, Sweettoof have managed the virtually impossible … getting playlisted on Radio 1, and they're not even signed yet. I say 'yet' because if they can find the magic formula to get on Radio 1, then they could find the bleedin' Holy Grail …never mind a poxy record contract. Basically, Radio 1 have this promotion/service called One Music ( www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onemusic ), whose purpose is to prove to the licence payer that in their quest for new music they are at least attempting to look a bit further than Danni Minogue and Blazin' Squad. Through things like regular professional advice and a forum/competition for unsigned bands, they are trying to be instrumental in finding the next Coldplay. And they're not doing too badly; last year it brought the fantastic M.A.S.S. ( www.masstheband.com  ) to our attention and this year we have the wonderful and funky Sweettoof. And they deserve it too … imagine Massive Attack mixed with a bit of Galiano and Arrested Development with a bit of late night London on top and you're still not quite there.  Live is where it all makes sense, so check out their fantastic website at www.sweettoof.com  for upcoming gigs/parties/releases, and get in there now before the masses.

The Blatant Lies Big Band are a couple of good-time local boys who play a selection of covers and their own comedy type songs on this 19-track album 'Playing in the Park'. Of course there's a bit of Ian Dury on here, but overall it's very much in the style of John Otway, the longstanding king of self deprecating music/comedy, and indeed the great man's presence is felt throughout this CD; from his cameo spoken-word intro, to an actual cover of his 'Cor Baby, That's Really Free' halfway through. My guess is that they are a right giggle live and they play in the Far Flung field at Glastonbury every year. And good luck to you boys. www.blbb.co.mars

Local heroes Spaghetti West One are turning into a bit of a supergroup. The Stokey band recruited esteemed musical craftsman and guitarslinger, Mike 'Gibo' Gibson (he who organises Acousticism at the Tup) to play on their new CD, 'Clint Goes Eastward', and as of close of play yesterday, he was still there. They still play reworked versions of Ennio Morricone tunes (hence the name), but they now do it a bit better, with the odd Bacharach ditty thrown in. They are a local treasure and they deserve to be cherished. To book 'em, call Kim on 07961 563 393.

A special mention must be made about a great CD that I received by a local gentleman called Malcolm Joseph entitled 'Blood of the Blue People'. It's kinda shuffly and trippy and dubby and funky with some lovely sounds on there, sounding a bit like Sly Stone produced by Scratch Perry. Turns out that he's got more pedigree than a poodle at Crufts, as he has played with loads of people over the years from Womack and Womack and Kool and the Gang to Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry. In fact the Bristol sound is a good reference point for his music. Really good and worth checking out. Contact malcolmxb@hotmail.com (PS You can catch him DJing at The Music Temple - Auld Shillelagh every other Friday night)

Church St CleanersAnd finally, I have come up with a good idea. If you are involved in music in any way; whether you own a 4 track or you are a bass player or you own a van or you want to sell your bassoon and you want to Share your Wares, then contact me at
mathew.priest@virgin.net  and I shall make it known to everyone else in the world by
utilising a spare section of this fine organ. I am provisionally calling it 'Handy Contacts'. Any suggestions for a better name, please contact the same address.
