The Rio Cinema (020 7241 9410) is running a Rep Week,
including such movies as Solaris (the George Clooney remake), Gangs of New York and
Chicago. They are screening four films a day and the Week ends on 4 April. The following
week sees the Viva! Spanish Film Week, featuring London premieres of new Spanish films and
ending 10 April. The main features from 11-24 April are Jungle Book 2 (All-New and
Baloo Too !) at 2pm and 4.15pm daily and the subtitled fantasy thriller Intacto,
daily at 6.15pm and 8.45pm. Lilya 4-Ever (an emotional roller-coaster ride through a
living hell) begins a two-week run on 25 April.
The Arcola Theatre (020 7503 1646) will be staging The Nest, a modern
German classic play by Franz Xaver Kroetz and translated by David Schneider. It runs from
8-26 April, with performances at 8pm, Tuesday-Saturday and 5pm Sunday.The Arcola has now
been in business for two years and recently received the Time Out Award 2003 for
'Outstanding Achievement'.
On the local music front, Ryan's (020 7275 7807) has its usual busy
roster of gigs, with John Paul Holt the 3rd plus support on 3 April, while the following
evening upstairs has Tattoo John providing a night of soul funk and upliftin
toons and the Locomotions play downstairs. The regular Kacey Nails accoustic juke
box (new acts welcome) appears on the 9th and the splendid electronic adventurers the Dog
Heads are guests on the 12th. Alternative jazz exponents Flim Flam play on the 16th while
the 18th sees Psycobilly record hop 50s style. Dont forget the weekly Monday
Salsa sessions at 7.30pm.
Down the road, the Vortex (020 7254 6516) is back to full nightly
occupancy. Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs brings her quartet to the club on 2 April and
other performances include Ed James Nu Quartet on the 5th, Stan Tracey Trio on the 12th,
Zoe Lewis on the 16th and Carol Grimes New Coats on the 25th and 26th. Pick up the

The Auld Shillelagh (020 7249 5951),
recently listed by Time Out as one of the top twelve Irish bars in London, alternates its
Friday entertainments between Music Temple and the Other Brothers, while on Sundays the
pub presents either Democracy or the Green Room. On the last Sunday of each month Belinda
hosts the famed Peel Me A Grape. Also coming in April is a Johnny Cash evening The
Man in Black. Check with the pub for timing. On 7 May the Sons of Lee Marvin makes a
welcome appearance.
The Stoke Tup (020 7249 1318) puts on its monthly Acousticism evening on
30 April and also runs a music quiz every Tuesday at 9pm, while Johnny Miller entertains
the diners at Barracuda every Friday evening. The revamped Booths
(020 7923 9332) has DJs from Thursday through Sunday and the White Hart also presents DJs
on Friday and Saturday evenings.
On Sunday evenings beginning at 7.30 Clicia (020 7254 1025) is host to a
live acoustic duo. Firefly Rhum Shack also has a full programme of music.

back and Funky (Tuesdays), Shaft and Funk (Wednesdays), Rosebird Radio Show (1969s and
1970s) (Thursdays), Salsa al Piso (Fridays), DJs (Saturday) and a Jam Session on Sunday.
Further afield the Jazz Club (020 7254 9278) in Dalston runs its Pink
Panther night on Thursdays and DJs play Jack Jones and Bossa Nova on Fridays and
Saturdays. Oceans (020 8533 0111) programme includes DuOud
(featuring Talvin Singh) on 10 April, UK Cup Clash, with Mighty Crown and Black Cat, on
the 12th, Sweet R&B club night on the 18th and Solid Love on the 25th. Check with the
venue for full listing and prices.
