One of the best places to meet other quality musicians in Stokey is at the Jam Session that happens down at Bar Lorca at the bottom of Church Street every Sunday night. A load of musicians, singers and percussionists meet up there every week and basically make it up as they go along, though you’d never guess. I certainly didn’t. The vibe is generally Jazz and Funk and all things in between, although I’m sure they’d encourage other styles. The singers are wonderful and the standard of musicianship is quite phenomenal, which could be a bit off-putting if you’re a bit crap, but there’s always the triangle until you build up your confidence. It’s not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re into playing and you like it a bit funky, then dust off your bassoon and get down there. If you can’t be bothered with all that then check this lot out:

I’m in a band called angel tech ( www.angeltech.co.uk ) which was the first band Chris Blackwell signed to Palm Pictures. We’re now on brain-gel records and have been doing normal band type stuff (ie gigs and releases) as well as crossing over into a more live art thing, on tour with the devised show ‘skinworks’ which was made in collaboration with ‘bodies in flight’ theatre.

We’re a 3-piece with lots of programming, sampling and stuff, and we all sing when the mood takes us. We’ve had lots of nice reviews over our 8 years and are looking to get involved with the local music scene in SN. We’re also writing music for theatre/film/tv to order (and would love to do a computer game soundtrack). I don’t know if any of the above is of any interest whatsoever, but there it is. I’m just putting out the feelers into the local music scene and looking forward to meeting some people in that area.
Thanks for your ear/eye and take care.

I’m a songwriter, composer and lyric writer and keyboard player and I am looking for collaboration with a producer/arranger I would also be interested in finding a band to play my songs. I’ve been writing for almost 2 years, mainly ballads, light pop songs and instrumentals. I think they have quite memorable melodies and catchy choruses. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please let me know.
I have a home recording studio.
Many thanks

Hi there. I’ve just spotted your great idea in the recent N16 magazine, and thought I’d get in touch. I’m not sure if this is the kind of thing you were thinking of, but I thought I’d get in touch and give it a go! I’m a photographer, and after 2 years of working as an assistant, I’m now looking to concentrate on my own portfolio of photographs. The area I am heading into is band/musician photography, but my only problem is finding the bands! I have done promotional photographs for quite a few bands over the last couple of years, most of whom are friends, or I approach them at gigs. I’m now looking to get some more people to shoot. I have a portfolio now that people can see if they want, to see what I do. I can do shots on location, indoors/outdoors, I can get lighting equipment, and I can also do live shots for people if they want. Basically, all I need are the people to photograph. It won.t cost them much, only helping a little with costs of processing, and paying for any prints they want. I hope this is enough information for you. If I think of anything else
exciting, then I’ll let you know! People can contact me on 07887928578, oh, and my name is Rebecca Bradbury!
Thanks a lot.

Hi, my name is Tamara, and I’m a fellow Stokey resident. I’m writing to you because I am a 21 year old female singer into jazz funk soul, nu jazz and nu soul, and I am looking for like-minded musicians to jam with, in the hope of forming a band to create great live music with.Do you know of, or can you point me in the direction of, any local (or just outside the area) musicians that may be interested in helping me? I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers, Tam.

Can’t get away to those summertime blues? No dosh? No air ticket? Stuck in Stokey? Don’t worry there is a lively summer of music lined up in the usual Stokey haunts, listed in no particular order as N16 Magazine shows neither fear nor favour in these matters.

The Stoke Tup (020 7249 1318) is continuing with its Wednesday night ‘Open Mic’ from 8pm onwards. Open what? Open Mic offers a fortnightly platform ‘for singers, songwriters, poets, wannabees, wontbees to bring along (their) weapon of choice and face the open mic’. The Stoke Tup’s weekly Tuesday night music quiz will continue throughout the summer and their acoustic evening will recommence in September. The Daniel Defoe (020 7 254 2906) is offering jazz and laid-back bluegrass every Friday and Saturday night from 9pm.

Firefly Rhum Bar (T’BonePromotions 07946 776 592) not only makes the meanest cocktails in town, but also presents ‘Speakeasy, The Mayhem Returns’ every third Monday night from 7.45pm - next presentation 31 July. Firefly will also have live jazz jamming sessions with the Pablo Quartet on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday nights. Bar Lorca (020 7275 8659) offers its ‘special summer cocktails’. Friday night is Salsa al Piso’ that’s cool cheek-tocheek salsa to you. Saturday night is ‘Club Sonic’, Sunday is a live jam session night, Monday is salsa dance classes, Tuesday night is laid back and funky, Wednesday is a R&B session and Thursday is soul and rock’n’roll.

The Vortex (020 7254 6515) continues with its usual excellent nightly programme throughout the summer. Highlights include The Kenny Wheeler Big Band on 24 July and Martha and Eve on 28 July who offer a combination of ‘Mediterranean rock, folk, soulful steely-edged guitars and spine-tingling vocals’. The Barracuda (020 7275 0400) hosted by the inscrutable Teng and with one of the best gardens in Stokey, offers Professor Johnny Miller on keyboards every Friday night. The Prince (020 7923 4766) has a Monday night jazz jamming session with Dino and it’s free.

Clicia (020 7 254 1025) puts on acoustic, jazz and Latin music every Sunday night from 7.30pm. The Eye (020 7 923 7781), Stokie’s premier rock venue, is chilling out over the summer and keeping its powder dry for September. Its sister venue Ryan’s (020 7275 7807) will maintain its usual music programme over the summer. Phone for details. The Auld Shillelagh (020 7249 5951) threatens us with thrills and kills over hot summer weekend nights. Frank - the coolest night in Stokey - will be back.

At the time of going to press, other venues planning summer frolics include The Birdcage (020 8806 6740) The Londesborough (020 7254 5865), Booth’s (020 7923 9332) and Bodrum (020 7254 6464).
