news in brief
Schools - The Good News
Three years ago local resident Christopher Jenner-Cole became head teacher at St Mathias
Primary School. The school had been without a head for a year and a half, and was on the
point of being placed in Special Measures for the second time normally a sign that
the school could well be closed.
Today, however, this remarkable man has turned the school around in a most remarkable
manner. And in recognition Christopher has just won this years Windrush Education
Champion Award for his enthusiasm, innovation and creativity. The award is given to
educational professionals from ethnic minority backgrounds who aim to improve the level of
commitment and positive thinking within the community.
Schools The Bad News
In a Hackney Education document from October 2002 the Learning Trust acknowledged that
at any one time in the Borough about 200 secondary-aged children are seeking (but
unable to secure) a secondary school place. This summer, with the closure of
Kingsland School, the figure has risen rapidly and for many young people and their
parents/carers this means particularly for boys there are simply no places available for
the new school year in September. Although technically there is surplus capacity in the
Boroughs primary schools, this is not the case in the N16 area. And for many parents
who bought a home over the past few years in what was then the catchment area of a
particular school, they now find that the catchment area has shrunk, in some cases
dramatically.
N16 has been approached by a number of concerned parents
about the situation.
We would like to hear from anyone whose child is due to enter either Primary or Secondary
education in September but has not been able to get the school of their choice or, worse
still, has no place for the start of term.

Nearly twenty years since
plans for a permanent sailing centre were first raised, the West Reservoir Centre has now
been officially opened by Sports Minister Richard Caborn. The centre offers a wide range
of water activities and a large nature area. For example, after the official opening there
was an afternoon of dragon boat racing.
It was a special moment for the sail sports manager Steve Ellis who was one of the
original team who have laboured long and hard ever since Thames Water handed over the keys
to the reservoir. The centre already has over 350 children enrolled on different courses,
while a large number of adults also sail or row in the evenings and at the weekend. If you
fancy getting out on the water there are plenty of courses available at all levels.
Stokey has a diverse population. There are longestablished Caribbean,
Turkish, Jewish, Chinese, Asian and Kurdish communities, to name but a few. The latest
influx includes a young Polish community that is particularly visible in Stokeys
bars and restaurants. N16 welcomes the latest newcomers.
