The famous Church Street jazz bar, the Vortex, now
presents the Sunday Joint a mixture of phat beats, hip hop, funky
soundtrax, drum n bass and loungecore. Top Djs appear every Sunday from 8pm to 12pm
(admission £2.00). On the first Sunday of every month Sonny Mann holds court with his
chapel of Karaoke. Aided by Deputy Dan, the session transports you to the heavenly
chimes of country and Western, Las Vega Showtunes and the finest disco hits.
At Bar Lorca, every second Sunday, musician and poet Freddy Macha
organises and hosts an Ethnic Music Night promoting the diverse cultures of Hackney.
Having in the last six months featured musicians from as far apart as Japan, Uruguay,
Barbados and Kenya, the next gig is on Sunday 20th June as part of the Festival, and
includes musicians from Ghana, South America and Uganda, as well as Yemaya, a Nicaraguan
dancer. The event is free, starting at 8.00pm.
Dodgys last major gig before Glastonbury is happening on 17th June at Stoke
Newington Town Hall. Presented by the Festival and Zen Studios, the concert also
features locally-based bands Largeman and Haiku, as well as drum n bass from DJ
Clarky. This will be a popular event, so phone for tickets on 0171 502 6733 / 6752. See
you there.
Speaking of Dodgy, N16 will be promoting a music night at The Lorca in
early September. We intend to showcase the best music in the Stoke Newington area so, if
your band is interested in playing at the gig, please send in your demo tapes to Lorca
Gig, PO Box 21149, London N16 6WU The event will be presented by local musician Mathew
Priest from Dodgy, and Mathew will offer an accoustic set on his Saturday morning GLR show
to the band which most appeals to him. We know theres a lot of talent out there, so
lets hear from you. It should be a good night.
Our cover artist David Downes is currently staging an exhibition,
featuring his drawings and paintings of London and Stoke Newington, at Martin Village
Gallery, Gutteridges Yard, next to the Fox Reformed.
