| . | p8 Hi, I used to live in Carysfort Road until Feb 1954 when my father decided
to move our family to Los Angeles, a move which I have never been happy about. I often
think about my old stomping grounds and how great it was to be able to walk to the Arsenal
on game days. It looks like the old area has undergone quite a change since I saw it last
during a visit in August 1986. I am going to explore the website to see what has been
going on. Congratulations! Well done! I saw your new N16 magazine in a restaurant in Church Street and was
amazed. I have seen many free magazines/papers for customers in restaurants but this was
exceptional. Of course, advertising is always there but the well presented articles made a
good impression on me. I am a freelance journalist from Finland and have lived here for
five months. My favourite hobby is birdwatching and I go to the River Lea and Abney Park
Cemetery. Why not have a story about the birds and where to watch them in the Stoke
Newington area? I am writing to congratulate N16 on its first issue. The Hackney Labour
Group supports this excellent initiative. Its great that the community in Stoke
Newington now has such a professional publication. Dear all @ N16 the paper for Stoke Newington Church Street. Today a friend in Stoke Newington sent me the N16 paper. I have read every
inch of it with great interest. For a few moments I was back there in my beloved Stoke
Newington. I was born in 1947 in Manor Road (no. 111). We lived for a short time in
Lakeside Court, Green Lanes, and at the age of five I lived at 2 Rosemary House,
Grazebrook Road. I went to William Patten School and then to St Marys just off
Church Street. I would walk down Queen Elizabeths Walk down the little wall at the
side of the park. I went to school on the 106 to Clapton Pond and then on to Homerton.
When I left school I worked in the Town Hall, and my mum and dad drank in the Jerry (now
the Auld Shillelagh) opposite the Old Baths. My mum beat Eric Bristow at darts once when
he was 16 years old. In 1971 I came to Suffolk and my two daughters are grown up now. But
I just want to say I loved Stoke Newington. Its a very special place. I really
enjoyed your paper. Last night I visited Booths Bar before eating at Il Bacio. Whilst at
Booths I picked up your April N16 newspaper. I think its great, informative
and a wonderful idea for the area. Having lived in the area from childbirth, but moving
out due to work commitments, I still have Stokey in my blood and visit Church Street at
least once a week (if not more). It truly is a great place to meet and socialise. One
question, though - could I receive your newspaper by mail? I think that it is truly great
and dont want to miss an issue. (Your comments please.) Yes, we will mail copies if postage is paid but dont forget were also on the internet at www.n16mag.com Editor. Thank you for N16. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very
professionally produced. We saw your new magazine on your website. It is interesting that you have
a magazine for only one part of London. Here in Moscow we have the newspapers covering the
events in each part of Moscow but we have only paper ones. Please, more
articles on the arts, ballet and local history. There is too much on pubs and restaurants.
Does N16 editorial staff live in pubs and restaurants? Congratulations on a super first issue of N16. The place seems to have
changed dramatically since I lived there for a few years around 1960. Then crime was far
more prominent than fine restaurants. A couple of doors from where I lived in Alconbury
Road was the Alconbury Stores, where two regular customers turned out to be the famous
spies, the Krogers. It was in Evering Road that the Kray twins killed Jack The
Hat McVitie in 1967. Posh hostelries and smart boutiques would have stood out then. I would like to know what people in Stoke Newington feel about the
abandoned plans for the Hackney-Chelsea tube line. I often see articles in the local press
about the bus routes, but no discussion about getting a lobby together to resurrect the
proposed tube line. Would this be popular? Is anyone doing it already? I found your April issue very interesting but I was left wondering who you
are. Why youre doing it? Whos funding you etc? I would really appreciate it if
in your next issue you could give some background and context to this venture. (See
next page, Editor)
