Hi, I used to live in Carysfort Road until Feb 1954 when my father decided to move our family to Los Angeles, a move which I have never been happy about. I often think about my old stomping grounds and how great it was to be able to walk to the Arsenal on game days. It looks like the old area has undergone quite a change since I saw it last during a visit in August 1986. I am going to explore the website to see what has been going on.

Congratulations! Well done!

I got a copy of the magazine the other day at the Tup pub and found myself gasping with amazement at the quality of the paper. This morning I visited the web site and the surprise was even greater. Brilliant. One thing though, try to get as many companies as possible on your site (services) so when I need a plumber (for example) I can go and find it in your pages.

Good Luck.
Helen Randall

I saw your new N16 magazine in a restaurant in Church Street and was amazed. I have seen many free magazines/papers for customers in restaurants but this was exceptional. Of course, advertising is always there but the well presented articles made a good impression on me. I am a freelance journalist from Finland and have lived here for five months. My favourite hobby is birdwatching and I go to the River Lea and Abney Park Cemetery. Why not have a story about the birds and where to watch them in the Stoke Newington area?

I am writing to congratulate N16 on its first issue. The Hackney Labour Group supports this excellent initiative. It’s great that the community in Stoke Newington now has such a professional publication.

Good luck to everyone involved in producing N16.

Best wishes,

Cllr David Manion, Leader
Hackney Labour Group

Dear all @ ‘N16 the paper for Stoke Newington Church Street.’

You are so very sophisticated! You have such good taste! You are so, so clever! You ooze charm and good breeding! You are so right on! Your homes are decorated just so!

You eat and drink at such wonderful gastronomic establishments! You are so fashionable in your own professional little way!

Your website is so beautifully designed!

Now that you have got the response for which you have so eagerly been craving, all that remains is that you PISS OFF BACK TO ISLINGTON OR WHEREVER IT IS THAT YOU CAME FROM — stop trying to create us in your own image and leave our community to the REAL people of Stoke Newington! Like America and Columbus we did actually exist BEFORE being ‘discovered’.

Now I dare you to print THAT in your pretentious little publication!

Matthew Adams

Today a friend in Stoke Newington sent me the N16 paper. I have read every inch of it with great interest. For a few moments I was back there in my beloved Stoke Newington. I was born in 1947 in Manor Road (no. 111). We lived for a short time in Lakeside Court, Green Lanes, and at the age of five I lived at 2 Rosemary House, Grazebrook Road. I went to William Patten School and then to St Mary’s just off Church Street. I would walk down Queen Elizabeth’s Walk down the little wall at the side of the park. I went to school on the 106 to Clapton Pond and then on to Homerton. When I left school I worked in the Town Hall, and my mum and dad drank in the Jerry (now the Auld Shillelagh) opposite the Old Baths. My mum beat Eric Bristow at darts once when he was 16 years old. In 1971 I came to Suffolk and my two daughters are grown up now. But I just want to say I loved Stoke Newington. It’s a very special place. I really enjoyed your paper.

Many thanks and best wishes

Mrs Gallington, Suffolk

Last night I visited Booth’s Bar before eating at Il Bacio. Whilst at Booth’s I picked up your April N16 newspaper. I think it’s great, informative and a wonderful idea for the area. Having lived in the area from childbirth, but moving out due to work commitments, I still have Stokey in my blood and visit Church Street at least once a week (if not more). It truly is a great place to meet and socialise. One question, though - could I receive your newspaper by mail? I think that it is truly great and don’t want to miss an issue. (Your comments please.)

Andrew Wiffen, Essex

Yes, we will mail copies if postage is paid but don’t forget we’re also on the internet at www.n16mag.com — Editor.

Thank you for N16. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very professionally produced.

Norah Casey, Editor, Irish Post

We saw your new magazine on your website. It is interesting that you have a magazine for only one part of London. Here in Moscow we have the newspapers covering the events in each part of Moscow but we have only ‘paper’ ones. Please, more articles on the arts, ballet and local history. There is too much on pubs and restaurants. Does N16 editorial staff live in pubs and restaurants?

Alexey N. Gusev and Ludmila Kovrovskaya

Congratulations on a super first issue of N16. The place seems to have changed dramatically since I lived there for a few years around 1960. Then crime was far more prominent than fine restaurants. A couple of doors from where I lived in Alconbury Road was the Alconbury Stores, where two regular customers turned out to be the famous spies, the Krogers. It was in Evering Road that the Kray twins killed Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie in 1967. Posh hostelries and smart boutiques would have stood out then.

Peter Arnold, Hanworth Park

I would like to know what people in Stoke Newington feel about the abandoned plans for the Hackney-Chelsea tube line. I often see articles in the local press about the bus routes, but no discussion about getting a lobby together to resurrect the proposed tube line. Would this be popular? Is anyone doing it already?

Marinella Nicolson

I found your April issue very interesting but I was left wondering who you are. Why you’re doing it? Who’s funding you etc? I would really appreciate it if in your next issue you could give some background and context to this venture. (See next page, Editor)

I really liked your all-round presentation of issues, for example on the thorny Proposed Controlled Parking Zone E issue. I agree about extending hours to midnight as I live in a street which junctures with Green Lanes where there are many clubs and shops open into the evening, which makes parking in the late evening the most difficult time. You didn’t mention the availability of visitors permits in your article. One of my main concerns (as a pedestrian, cyclist and motorist) is the lack of cycle lanes - in spite of the widening of pavements, for example on Albion Road. What a missed opportunity. My other concern around this is the fact that many cyclists have now taken to illegally cycling on pavements, thus making pedestrian life uncomfortable. Surely there must be space (separate) for everyone? Someone needs to speak up for those of us who are still pedestrians. My other perennial moan is about the disgraceful state of litter in our streets and the inability of the Council to really grapple with it.

Again thanks for N16 and good luck.

Gina Barker
