When we decided to start a paper for people in the Stoke Newington Church
Street area, we thought there might be a positive response. It was clear that no other
local journal or freesheet covered the place adequately. However, we were completely
unprepared for the remarkable reception that N16 received. Within 10 days of the launch,
nearly 5,000 copies had been taken by customers from the various outlets. The remainder
were gone within the next fortnight.
Most were displayed in local shops, restaurants, pubs, newsagents and the library. Thanks
to newsagent Chris Patel, around 500 were delivered through letterboxes.
It was noticeable that readers in pubs and restaurants did not just flick through the
paper and push it aside but took a copy away with them. We believe that this was due to
the right balance between the amount of space allocated to articles and to advertising.
This is also good news for advertisers as it means that readers pay attention to the whole
of the contents.
We intend to broaden our coverage and range of contributors to reflect wider aspects of
life in the area. We could not achieve this in one issue. Thanks to our readers,
distributors and advertisers, the June/July edition has more pages and an increased
circulation.
N16 is published by n16 publishing limited, an independent company whose directors are Rab
MacWilliam (publisher), Tim Webb (editor) and Trevor Jones (advertising and circulation).
Zoran Jevtic of Audiografix is the designer of the paper and its website. Andrea Küsgen
deals with advertising sales. The magazine is funded entirely through advertising revenue.
The
Stoke Newington Street Festival on Sunday 13 June (12 noon - 7.30 pm) kicks off three weekends packed with entertainment, information, arts and
music. Highlights include a mega benefit gig by dodgy on 17 June, interactive video at the
Film Shop (18-21 June), outdoor drumming in Clissold Park (19 June), photographic
exhibitions, lots of entertainment for kids and plenty of street theatre on the opening
day. An estimated 40,000 people are expected.
Insomniacs, the undead and those who like the sound of birds twittering in the early
morning (birdsong) could try the Dawn Chorus nature walk in Abney Park Cemetery at 4.30 am
on Saturday 19 June.
This popular Stokey jamboree runs from 13-27 June and details are available in the
Festival Diary. Box Office 0171 502 6733/6752.
