Bored on Board 111 Church Street, N16 0UD, 020 7254 9740 Open: 11-6, Tues-Sat; noon-5 Sun. Street and skate-wear for the terminally cool of any age. From hats, shoes, socks, belts, key-chains, wallets, videos and watches to boards basic (£60) to pro (£185+), literally everything and then some for the serious sk8ter. And gift vouchers if you don’t know your beanie from your bottom.

Rainbow Glass Studios Guttridges Yard, 172c Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 0JL, 020 7249 0276. Open: 9.30-6, Sat Seriously beautiful glass ware – bowls, plates, sushi dishes and luminous hangings – from £10 to £200. And one of the most distinctive gift vouchers in the area: for a one-day class in stained glassmaking from the local master.

tanamanaJunk and Disorderly 129b Church Street, N16, 020 7275 7007. Open: 10.30-6, Mon-Sat; 11.30-6, Sun. Where to go when you’ve run out of ideas and money: armed only with a sense of humour (and the absurd) you should be able to sort out the
entire family (with the exception, perhaps, of the elderly aunt) in one protracted trip to J&D. Glorious, daft, kitsch stuff – and always great value. Hunker down and hunt.

Bore Busters 153 Church Street, 020 7254 6971. Purveyors of games, gadgets and gizmos for boys of all ages. All sorts of wacky stuff and perfect for the man in your life. Offerings include Scalextric (from £35-£150), kites, table football (starting at £149), Swatch watches and toys of all descriptions. Nothing like it in Church Street or, indeed, for miles around.

Popcorn 121 Church Street, N160UH, 020 7241 1333. Open: 10-6, Mon-Sat; 11-5 Sun. Newcomer Popcorn has clothes for miniature Stokistas from newborns to age 6 – from leading labels French Connection for Kids, Eat Your Greens, Ollie, Uttan and Brightbots. Plus nappy bags, hats, shoes (they’re trained shoe-fitters) + gift vouchers for grannies, aunties and uncles who want to do the right thing but get nervous.

Tana Mana 150-152 Stoke Newington Church Street, N16, 020 7249 5656. Open: 11-6, Mon-Sat; 12-5, Sun. Always an inspiring selection of undeniably beautiful things, carefully sourced by Tana’s enterprising owners. The scarves and shawls are excellent value (pashminas from £30 up), but don’t miss the soapstone bowls, saricovered note-books, the kulfi tins, fabric handbags, sarongs, throws, bedspreads, bangles, opium boxes (well, where do you keep yours?) and Indian
perfume bottles.
