You’re never more than a quick stumble away from a pub in Stoke Newington. Here is an updated guide to the bars and pubs in the area. In our next issue we will be publishing a similar listing of all the restaurants in N16.

Bird Cage, 58 Stamford Hill, N1 6 6XS Tel: 020 8806 6740. Lively bar with DJs Friday and Saturday offering a comfortable mix of good drinks and music. Daniel Defoe, 102 Church St N16 OLA Tel: 020 7254 2906. A spacious Charles Wells pub with lovely beer garden and good wine list. Real ale, homemade food, pool, TV, no kids. Opening hours: Mon-Thur 1pm-11pm, Fri 1pmmidnight, Sat noon-midnight, Sun noon-11pm.

Fox Reformed, 176 Church Street N16 OJL Tel : 020 7254 5975. A venerable institution on Church Street. Wine bar, bar and popular restaurant. Wide ranging wine list and excellent wine tasting. Heated garden area. Backgammon enthusiasts welcome. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 5pm-midnight, Sat and Sun noon-midnight.

Father Ted’s, 20 High St N16 7HU Tel: 020 7275 9251. Until recently, the Jolly Butcher’s. A bustling High Street pub with friendly staff. Lively on the weekends and open till 2am on Friday and Saturday. TV.

The Lion, 132 Church Street, N16 Tel: 020 7254 0959. Trendy, welcoming bar in the middle of Church Street. On the site of the original Red Lion. Real ale, regular open mic night, alternative cabaret, comedy. Function room available for hire. Secluded garden. Large screen. Normal hours.

Londesborough, 36 Barbauld Rd N16 Tel: 020 7254 5865. Spacious bar with a large rear area and atrium. A good range of wines, spirits and beers and an excellent menu. DJs at weekends. Real ale, garden with barbecue. Sunday roasts. Opening hours: Mon-Thur 4.30pm-11.30pm, Fri 4.30pm-midnight, Sat noon-midnight, Sun noon-10.30pm.

Monarch, 68 Green Lanes N16 8EJ Tel: 020 7249 9109. Friendly, local pub, pool table, large screen TV. Normal hours.

The Prince, 59 Kynaston Rd N 16 OEB Tel: 020 7923 4766. Light and airy pub. Sunday Rare Breed roasts and eclectic wine list. Restaurant section and garden area. Real ales. Outdoor seating. New bar upstairs with draught ales, no food, open Thur-Sun, available for private hire. Opening hours: Mon-Sat noon-11pm, Sun noon - 10.30pm.

Rochester Castle, 145 High St N16 ONY Tel: 020 7249 6016. Huge Wetherspoon’s pub, offers the cheapest drinks for miles. Extensive range of real ales, with regular beer festivals and a garden area. Good-value wine list, daily menu and Sunday roasts. Non-smoking area. Kids until 7pm. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 10am-11pm, Sun 10am-10.30pm.

Rose & Crown, 199 Church St N16 9ES Tel: 020 7254 7497. A well-established local. The present pub was built in the 1930s and has remained true to its roots with original glass and wood panelling. A good selection of real beers and wellchosen wine list. Quiz nights every Tuesday, weekday lunches and Sunday roasts are Stoke Newington favourites. Sky Sport, dogs welcome (except lunchtime). Guesthouse rooms available. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 11.30am-11pm, Sun 11.30am-10.30pm.

Ryan’s Bar N16,181 Church Street N16 OUL Tel: 020 7275 7807. Cheerful, bright bar on two floors, with large, attractive beer garden. Range of evening entertainment including comedy and live music. Tonic, 97 Stoke Newington Road Tel: 020 7254 1967. Sofas, karaoke, pool table on site where Krystal’s once stood, down the road from the Yucatan. Thai food served. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 5pm-11pm, Sat and Sun 1pm-11pm.

Yucatan Bar 121, Stoke Newington Rd N16 8BT Tel: 020 7254 6198. Large establishment with plenty of screens showing sporting events and separate pool room. Outdoor seating on High Street. Normal hours.

Wheatsheaf, 6 Windus Rd N16 Tel: 0208 806 397. Smallish, friendly Stamford Hill local. Food lunch time, pool, great juke box. Normal hours.

White Hart, 69 High St. Tel: 0207 254 6626. Spacious, popular bar with enormous beer garden and elegant upstairs function room. Comfortable seating. Bar menu daily. Giant TV screen, table football, pool. Normal hours.

Anchor & Hope, 15 High Hill Ferry E5 Tel :020 8806 1730. Situated on the River Lee, this small bar is a real local community pub. A good excuse to plan a leisurely stroll along the tow path. Real ale, TV, normal opening hours. Under new management.

Alma, 59 Newington Green Rd, N1 4QU Tel : 0207 359 4536. Gastro pub with a friendly warm vibe and local feel. Good value quality food. All age groups welcome. Opening hours: Mon-Wed 5pm-11pm, Thur-Sat noon-11pm, Sun noon-10.30pm. Supper licence Fri and Sat to midnight.

Brownswood Park Tavern, 271 Green Lanes N4 Tel: 020 8809 2846. Close to Clissold Park and the Climbing Centre. Recommended menu. A great excuse for a walk across the park. Food, beer garden, darts, TV. Thai food. Normal opening hours.

Nobody Inn, 92 Mildmay Park, N1 Tel 020 7249 6430. Big pub on corner of Newington Green. Quizzes Thur-Sun, pool, pinball. Weekend brunch and good pub grub. Normal hours.

Weavers, 98 Newington Green Road N1 4BG Tel: 020 7354 9501. Used to be one of North London’s best live music pubs. Now regular Djs and new freshly cooked food menu. Mon-Sun 11am-11pm.

White House, 313 Highbury New Park, N5 2LB Tel : 020 7288 1074. Handy for Clissold Park and pre-Arsenal pint. Under new management. Home-made pies, barbecue grill Saturday nights, Sunday roasts. Opening hours: Mon-Fri noon-11pm, Sat noon-11pm, Sun noon-10.30pm.
