View from the Lane

By Nick Griffiths

p40

It never rains. Full stop. Bliss is the default for any Spurs fan. Three more signings, more money where Daniel Levy's mouth is. And how many football fans can truthfully say they're happy with their chairman?

Now it's up to Jol - new three year commitment - and the players. Pre-season, we won the Moonies' Peace Cup in Korea, competing against Real Sociedad, Boca Juniors and Lyon. We beat Porto 2-0 in a friendly, and were unbeaten with clean sheets in the Premiership, until we met Chelsea and Rob Styles at the Lane. It was a setback, but one we happily threw excuses at.

There was a time, not so long ago, when we craved midfielders. Now we have enough to start a farm. Why we needed Jermaine Jenas, I have no idea, but you can't deny that Jol had done his homework. 'Jenas is a real prospect', he said. 'He is not 18 or 19 years old, he is a little bit older.'

As is Edgar Davids - and whatever anyone says, it's a joy to see him plying his trade at the Lane. Teemu Tainio, Aaron Lennon, Wayne Routledge. so much quality (and pace at last) that bright young thing Reto Ziegler has been shipped out to Hamburg on loan. The only concern is that Robbie Keane will be leaving in January, before his contract runs out. I still think Defoe can be lazy - which Sven seemed to hint at recently - an accusation you could never lob at Keane. I'm going to draw a picture of Robbie from memory and hang it in my heart.

Anyway, with Mido suspended, Jol has drafted in Derby's Grzegorz Rasiak, possibly so that he can win at Premiership Scrabble. 'I saw this boy twice last year and he has got a very good record and he is a regular in the Polish team', noted our Martin, before sniping perhaps defensively. 'Some might say Poland are not a top country but they are first in England's World Cup group at the moment.' We'll see. He's a big lad and you don't hoof in headers for Defoe or Keane. Well, not without failing to score.

Packing Direct Ltd 3A Evering Road N16 0207 254 4848 Finally of the new trio, there's Korean Young-Pyo Lee, from PSV, for which we can presumably thank the Dutch connection. (Arnesen was Danish, and fuck him anyway.) Sounds like a good buy, if only hadn't resulted in the exit of Erik Edman, whom Liverpool fans will always remember.

Compare this squad with the same just one year ago, when we were still trying to understand Jacques Santini. Compare the atmosphere at the Lane. Compare the managers' heads! He's got no hair, but we don't care, Martin, Martin Jol. Ah, happy days.
