Question: What do Red Cabbage, Dim Twins, Cerebral Ratbags and Stokey Slappers have in common? Answer: No, they're not entrants for the Mercury Music Prize, but rather some of the enthusiastic and wackily-monikered teams who compete in the Rose & Crown's hugely popular Quiz Night.

Rose & CrownStaged in the Church Street pub every month, the event packs in the punters. On the night we visited there were over 150 would-be Masterminds and, by 8.30, there was not a spare table to be had. The questions are set and read out by landlady Mabel, a lassie frae the Highlands and therefore beyond reproach, and the entirely reasonable fee of £1 per person ensures admission to the tournament, with all the money returned in the form of prizes.

Before the quiz proper, there is a teaser quiz laid out in every table (sample questions: 1) What is the linking word between these three words? - hat / music / one night; breaking / game / vantage. 2) Decipher the following: 36,741 PA the FD at W; 360D in a C) (Answers below).

At 9.00, Mabel's amplified tones announce that the game is on. The questions range through the relatively easy to the tricky, including sometimes the scarcely credible (eg How many weeks did Bryan Adams' hit 'Everything I Do' stay at number one? The answer is not the obvious 'Why?', as many replied, but 'sixteen weeks'). Also, unlike many pub quizzes, you don't have to be a TV soap fan there were no questions on the antics of Bianca, Kevin et al. Interestingly, a team called Hopeless won the quiz, so if you call yourself Crap or Rubbish you're probably in with a chance.

There was much bonhomie and banter about the place, and concentration was aided by constant refills of the well-kept Pedigree and Adnams and the good selection of lagers and wines. If you want to make public your complete lack of general knowledge, the next event is in October. Give Mabel a ring on 020 7254 7497 for more information.

Below are some of the questions, and we have printed the answers on page 19. No cheating, or we'll tell Mabel.
