Former Minister of Transport Glenda Jackson has accepted an invitation from a dining club called 'Socialist Piecrust' to eat and speak at the Fox Reformed as part of her campaign to become mayor of London. In between mouthfuls she may wish to consider the lack of proper public transport in Hackney and why little has improved since the election. Her arch rival for London's top job is Ken Livingstone, who represented Stoke Newington on the old Greater London Council.

defoe1.jpg (77331 bytes)The Council has consulted local residents about the new use of the Defoe Road refuse depot site. They intend to move its activities to Millfields, off Chatsworth Road. Under a 'waste by water' scheme, some of the rubbish will be moved along the Lea canal to the Edmonton incinerator. The Council received only 18 people replies, 8 of whom supported housing development and 4 advocated more green space. The Church Street Business Association argues that a general plan for the area should be drawn up rather than piecemeal planning.

It looks as though the lampposts in Church Street will be missing their usual seasonal cheer this Christmas and New Year. The cash-strapped Council has written to local businesses saying they can't afford the lights and asking them to pay up. The Business Association is considering the costs and the options. Any chance of a sleigh decked out in Arsenal colours driven by a replica Arsène Wenger?

The Spanish anarchist squatters have left the former United Reformed Church building opposite Abney Park Cemetery. We never learnt much about their political philosophy except that they firmly believed in liberating cigarettes from customers on the terrace at Booth's bar. The site is scheduled for a block of flats.

foxteam
The Fox Reformed backgammon team
competed in the world championship in Monte Carlo recently. They achieved considerable success. Alastair Hogg won through to the last 16 and the 'A' Team reached the final, losing only narrowly to an Israeli/American team. There is a backgammon tournament for local enthusiasts at the Fox at 7.30 pm on Monday nights.

Fish are dying in the Clissold lakes, the Park Users' Group has been told. The cause is an infestation of parasites due to the mild conditions last winter.

The Stoke Newington Cricket School received a boost when the Middlesex County Cricket Club passed on a £500 cheque from an anonymous donor. The school trains kids from local primary schools. Alex Tudor, Surrey and England fast bowler and batsman hero of the first test against New Zealand presented coaching certificates to around 25 children in September.

Part of Wilmer Place car park is scheduled for re-development. The Council has asked developers to submit plans for 'mixed use, sustainable development.' What does that mean? There are also rumours that the old Town Hall will shortly be put up for sale as part of the search for money by the Council.

Unfortunately, we have had to postpone our local bands' evening at the Bar Lorca. Thanks to everyone who has sent in a tape, and we hope to stage the event early in the new year. Details in our Xmas issue
