A group of N16 contributors and advertisers pose rather unsteadily for a photograph after a recent Italian wine-tasting evening upstairs at the Tup. Organised by landlord Karl (third from left) and N16 , the event was hosted by the Tup's wine supplier Daniel O'Keefe (seated) of Hallgarten Wines. We tasted (let's be honest we drank) twelve Italian wines ranging from a delicate Piedmontese dry white to a rip-roaring, dark red Barolo, and Daniel conducted the evening with a mixture of wit, erudition and abstemiousness (he was driving). It was generally agreed, in the increasingly slurred conversations, that Italian wine can more than hold its own against the French and New World competition. The more dedicated among us took tasting notes, which was just as well as the next morning's recollection was less than reliable.
Hallgarten have special offers if you buy at least twelve bottles, mixed if you wish. Contact Daniel on 0589 270323. Prego!

Shameless Plugs

N16 Publisher, Rab MacWilliam, is co-author of a recently-published book, Great Football Moments of the Century. The book is an affectionate and informative account of the twentieth-century's great footballers, teams, games and unforgettable moments, and is illustrated by over 130 colour and black and white photographs. A treat for all you Jim Baxter fans out there. Published by Hamlyn, the book is available from all good bookshops, at the entirely reasonable hardback price of £18.99. Lovers of literature might also like to be reminded that our editor Tim Webb's The Armour-Plated Ostrich is also available in bookshops. Published last year, the book is an acclaimed analysis of Britain's defence industry. Great Christmas presents
