The proposals were discussed at a packed meeting of the
November Stoke Newington Neighbourhood Committee. The event was well conducted and mainly
free from knee-jerk anti Council accusations. Representations from the Church Street
Business Association and residents of various streets and roads were made to the local
Councillors with hardly any 'not in my back yard' (nimby) pleading. After an intervention
by the Labour group -supported (refreshingly) by the Green and Liberal Democrat
Councillors - it was agreed that much wider consultation, including a clear summary
leaflet to be supplied direct to all households and businesses, would take place. An
exhibition of the proposals would be organised.
The Council have made an honest attempt to respond to the complaints about the quality of
life in Stoke Newington. Whether or not these proposals are appropriate will depend on the
public response. If you have any views on the matter please write to us at N16 magazine.
Note: if the two schemes are implemented together, general traffic would not be allowed to
turn into and out of Church Street at the junction with the High Street.
