Tom Fry and Nick Bonner interviewed several local residents on
Church Street and asked them 'What would you like to see Ken Livingstone do for Stoke
Newington?'
Frank Martin, Lordship Park, 76, retired
Cleaned up, for a start. I hate the mess but I blame the people for that, they dump
rubbish in the park and the local streets. The one thing I would really like to see Ken do
would be for him to clean up and sort out Clissold Park, have it run properly like it used
to be. They should bring back the pitch and put and bring back Paradise field for the
dogs, and they used to have bands playing at the bandstand all the time. They could also
bring back the boats on the lake.
Sally Watson, Georgia and Tabatha, Foulden Road, 37, video producer
Transport could do with improvement but it would very unrealistic in the area. A big
problem is there are not enough nurseries, even private ones, which means we may have to
move to Highgate just to find one. It seems the same with primary and secondary schools in
the area. There are a few very good ones but they are impossible to get into if you are
not in the catchment area.

Improve the traffic conditions. Parking in the area can be impossible and that needs to
change. We could also do with better public transport. Definitely a better bus service
throughout Stoke Newington. I also think he should improve public facilities, the main
thing being finishing Clissold pool and redeveloping the library, which is getting older
and older with no changes. But first of all get proper funding for schooling at all
levels, but primarily the secondary schools.
William, Sandbrooke Road, retired, 80
To be frank, I don't know, I don't have too much confidence in him as he betrayed his
party for his own good and I have my reservation that he would be more battling the
government than doing things for the people, and that's not good enough for the people.
When it comes to Stoke Newington, I would like to see clear leadership for the area and
know who is making the decisions. Instead we just see councillors, MPs, the Mayor and we
never seem to know.
Mrs. Cronin, Carysfort Road, florist, 32
Put more money into education, and improve the local schools. He should make sure that the
lottery money the park got ensures it gets properly cleaned up, and make sure they finish
the pool soon as well. What would really be nice for the area would be if they lit up the
town hall at night, because all the shops, restaurants and bars means the other end is
bright and busy at night.
Andy Tindall, Kyverdale, unemployed, 38
Improve it for a start and sort out all the unfinished roads. It's impossible to walk down
them these days, and it's getting much worse than better. Public transport seems alright
but I suppose there could be less traffic and better parking. He should make sure that the
swimming pool finishes as well.
Suzie, Jenner Road, student, 20
Leave all the open spaces as they are instead of building up the area with more houses. It
also needs to be made clear what the Education Action Zone is doing for education in the
area, as it seems people are still always arguing about places in schools. They also need
to make sure that all the smaller buses like the 106 are maintained, as they are important
for transport. They also need more local activities for kids of all ages, especially
teenagers, things for them to do.
Jay Patel, Dumont Road, teacher at Stoke Newington School, 34
There needs to be more activities for local children. The younger families with young
children have got the park but it seems like teenagers don't have much provided for them
in the area at all. It is really important that they finish the sports centre and that
local families and people have concessions. The school should have concessions as well, as
we didn't at the old one.
