WIRED UP STOKEY

by Mike Roberts

.

'Heaven, Hell or Hackney it's hard to be humble when you live in Stoke Newington.' These are opening words of 'Another stain on the silence', the eclectic home page of long term local resident Greg McNeill. And this seems to sum up the hundreds of local web sites that deal with all aspects of Stoke Newington life. Whatever your interest, there seems to be a local web site to point you in the right direction. Throughout Stoke Newington homes, schools, pubs and businesses are getting online. And we?re not Ignored by web sites around the world, Whether you?re trying to find a quote from Edgar Allen Poe or Anna Laetitia Barbauld, or the history of rock legend Mark Bolan, who was brought up on Stoke Newington Common, there are sites to provide you with all the details.

The Internet is also proving a real success for many local businesses. A visit to the web site of Stokesay Ware opens up an amazing collection of fine china dinner services for dolls’ houses. As you look at the beautiful plates and bowls you have to keep reminding yourself that many of the items are smaller than your fingernail. "The Internet has been terrific for our business", according to Karen Griffiths, of Stokesay Ware. "It means we can offer a full colour catalogue to a world wide market. Which is something we had never been able to afford before."

Visit almost any international backgammon competition, or even in the Fox Reformed wine bar, and you are sure to see boards made by David Naylor. David launched his site a year ago and now regularly receives orders from around the world. For example when I talked to him about his site, he said that he had in the previous week received orders from the Middle East and South America. Neither sale would have come about if he had not had his site.

For Bob Hollywood who runs Hollywood Design, the Internet has become an integral part of of his business marketing. His company designs and makes a wide range of furniture and architectural metalwork. When contacted about any new project he always asks people if they have visited his two web sites: yes, two. One site handles his Nu range of furniture while the other concentrates on his one-off architectural and large-scale sculpture pieces.

Whatever you may say about education in Hackney, the children of the area have access to a huge and fast (ADSL) intranet, which links nearly classroom to the Internet. Hackney was one of the first boroughs in the country to have such a system. And it is starting to pay dividends in the classrooms.

For schools like Grasmere Primary on Albion Road, the arrival of their school web site two years ago opened up the whole world to staff and pupils. They have made links with other Grasmere schools around the world. And because of their site they have become a firm favourite with teachers from many different countries who now come and visit the school.

Yes it's hard to be humble when there is so much talent in Stoke Newington. The power of the Internet is providing a voice for that talent. A comprehensive list of web sites will follow shortly please watch this space.
