EMPIRE BUILDING

Hackney Empire have announced that they have reached their building appeal target of £15 million, thanks to a final donation by Sir Alan Sugar of £1.3 million.

Commenting on his donation Sir Alan said: ‘I’ve always been proud of my Hackney roots. I was born there and went to Brook House School and indeed, bought fish and chips in the old shop next to the Empire.’ He recently stepped down as Spurs Chairman and after having sold the club, he told the Empire Appeal Chairman, Gruff Rhys Jones, that ‘his efforts for the community during his stewardship of the club seemed to have been wasted’. He wanted to bring pleasure back to those in Hackney where he was brought up and started his electronics business.

The theatre will go dark on 19 May for 14 months for rebuilding.
