FESTIVAL NEWS

Greetings once again from Festival HQ! This time I’m not going to babble on about how great the programme is going to be this year (though it will be), or brag about the achievements of last year’s event. Instead I want to take you behind the scenes for a moment...

First stop is our Festival Planning Department. As you are no doubt aware by now, the street festival will this year make more use of Clissold Park, and will feature three music stages, a Chill Zone (with its very own igloo) and a huge Family Zone for the young ones. Many of you felt that the street had become too crowded, and suggested that we use the Park more.

So, we listened, made the changes, but now we hear that people are worried that the street will be deserted! Rest assured we hope to get the balance right and to keep Church Street alive with music, performances, hourly street processions, and the usual array of art and madness. The street will not be comatose; it just shouldn’t be too crowded as it has been in recent years.

Our next port of call is Financial Management. Did you realise that the Street Festival costs over £380,000 to produce whilst the entire festival has a 2001 budget target of £250,000? Each year we start fundraising from scratch as we have no stashes of cash, council coffers or hugely wealthy benefactors on which to rely. The brighter the vision, the more mountainous the fundraising task. We still have well over a hundred grand to find in order to realise this year’s brilliant programme.

Remember, we’re a non-profit making, charitable organisation - all the money raised goes into the festival, to make it happen. If you want to help with the mammoth fundraising task why not join the Festival Friends Club? Your contribution could pay for a children’s puppet show or a pair of stilt-walkers on Street Festival day, and you can join from only £35 per month. Alternatively you could just send us a large donation cheque!

And, of course, people. If you would like to help us, but have more time than money then why not join the 150 local people who volunteer their time and energy to make the festival happen for the rest of the community? Whatever you are good at, we can find something important for you to do! It’s a great feeling to be part of something that, though based in Stoke Newington, attracts people from across London.

See ya in June!
