Go 'green' in 2012

For many of us in January, thoughts turn to self-improvement for the year ahead. But how many of us will be concerned with preserving our environment?

If you are wondering about how to become ‘greener’ but need guidance on where to start Hackney’s Sustainability Team has suggested a number of small yet significant ways in which you can make a difference.

The suggestions are as follows:
Pledge 1- I will donate my unwanted clothes to charity shops or take them to my nearest recycling bank.
Pledge 2 – I will leave my car at home more often and walk or cycle if I am travelling short distances.
Pledge 3 – I will find out how to use less energy by contacting Hackney’s energy advice service.
Pledge 4 – I will shop locally more often.
Pledge 5 – I will get involved by volunteering in my local park.

Local resident Hannah Lamdin of Upper Clapton has put her own twist on the sustainability pledges by promising to spend less time in the shower thereby using less water; and also plans to buy goods with less packaging and buy less in general.

Cllr Sophie Linden, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Sustainability, has also decided to join in by vowing to use her car less in 2012 and adds: “A new year is often thought of a good time to make positive changes in our lives. Doing a bit more to look after our environment even in small ways can provide major benefits to the borough as a whole if everyone plays their part."
