LGBT History Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) History Month is being held throughout the UK and Ireland during February.

Initiated in 2005, it is a celebration of cultural and sexual diversity, mutual understanding and tolerance, and is designed to counter homophobia and negative discrimination wherever it may still exist. There are a number of events in Hackney and neighbouring Tower Hamlets, as well as across other parts of East London.

This year’s theme concentrates on the arts, and a number of Hackney venues and schools are taking part. Some of the events include local poets Sharon Morris and Stoke Newington’s Peter Daniels reading their works at the CLR James Library in Dalston Lane between 6.30 and 8pm on 18 February, under the heading The Love That Dares Not. On the same evening, Hackney Museum is hosting local arts group deep:black on LGBT Month as part of the Hidden Archives 2010: Behind the Mask exhibition (6-7.30pm). Later in the month, Hackney Central Library is running Living Libraries a rich range of LGBT experiences and stories (12.30-4pm). This is only a brief selection of what is happening. And there is a lot more going on.
