Free construction course for residents

Hackney residents aged 16-25 are encouraged to take advantage of a free Built 2 Work four week construction training course starting in Sept 2011.

Working in an empty property, participants gain valuable hands-on experience in Carpentry, Tiling, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing and Health and Safety from qualified and experienced trainers who have vital industry experience.

This course is being delivered by Woodberry Works, the training and employment arm of Woodberry Down regeneration, led by Manor House Development Trust in partnership with Construction Youth Trust.

Participants have access to employers, CSCS Health and Safety test, further training opportunities, mentoring, travel and subsistence and flexibility for lone parents. There are also contributions from other Woodberry Works’ partners including Hackney Homes, Lakehouse, REDS10, Berkeley Homes, Hackney Community College, Mulalley, Citrus Training, Genesis Housing Group and Hackney Council.

Previous participants not only improved their skills and understanding of the construction industry, many made the move into education, further training or employment, as well as gaining vital life skills and confidence along the way.

Previous trainee of the Built 2 Work course, Adem said:
“It opened the door to something I didn’t know about. Without the Built 2 Work Course I wouldn’t be where I am now, ‘having passed my Level 1, and ready to start my apprenticeship.”
