Top Tips for Home Security

Hackney Homes has teamed up with Hackney Police to encourage tenants and leaseholders to make their homes secure while they take a holiday.

As there is often an increase in burglaries whilst people are on holiday it’s a good idea to do what you can to make your home burglary proof.

PC Sean Whelan said “Burglary has gone down in Hackney over the past few years and we want to continue to encourage residents to be vigilant, to follow these tips and keep themselves and their homes safe.”

Here are some simple tips:

Always lock the doors before you leave – most burglaries are commited by opportunist thieves who look for an easy way get into your home.

During the summer, many of us leave the window open. Remember to always close and lock all windows and curtains before you leave the house and at night.

When going away, make it look as though your house is occupied – have a neighbour collect your mail so that your letter box or doorstep does not look full.

Check your insurance policy when going abroad. Some insurance policies for contents do not cover you if you are away for more than 30 days.

If you do not have an alarm, consider investing a few pounds in a dummy alarm box. It may well deter the opportunist thief.
