We have been informed by Hackney Green Party about the sub-standard living conditions on this estate in Foulden Road, N16.
The Party has been contacted by concerned residents about their desperation and the exhaustions of avenues available when dealing with the organisation tasked with Hackney’s social housing, Hackney Homes. The Party’s Campaigns Officer Mustafa Korel, visited the Morris Blitz estate on 13 August 2011 and commented ‘nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. I left in disbelief that our council housing residents are left in living conditions that are unfit, hazardous to health and a major concern to the emotional welfare of residents.’ The main issues of complaint cited to this website are: · Mice infestation of the entire block with mice accessing each property through the redundant hot air ventilation system despite the block having three treatments · Upsurge of sewage into downstairs WC and kitchen sinks on the ground floor · Leaseholders asked to pay £28,000 towards refurbishment works, even though this contract is under Decent Homes budget – costs are not transparent/itemised · Damp and mould recurrence in treated areas, with one resident reporting the doctor informed her she has the lungs of a heavy smoker (despite having never smoked) owing to toxins emanating from mould and damp · Resident parking bays suspended without prior notification, yet residents are still expected to continue paying · Residents submitted three (3) petitions with over 50% of residents signing, yet concerns are still ignored
· All proposals are superficial and cosmetic without addressing root causes of problems · Residents stated this block was due for demolition 15 years ago, has been left in disrepair and all of a sudden is fit to live in · Conduct of the services staff has been ‘unprofessional’, including alleged flippant and condescending tone to residents · Surface drainage problems where water collects on concrete and tiled surfaces present a health hazard · Both major and minor cracks throughout the building are indicative of subsidence, yet no survey has been carried out despite residents asking for one
· One resident reported mice nibbled on their children’s finger during the night · Bad consultation process with residents Mustafa can be contacted on
