Children are invited to step into a world of adventure through Story Lab, 2012’s Reading Challenge at Hackney’s libraries this summer.
This year’s theme - Story Lab celebrates the imagination and features four characters Lex, Rani, Will and Evie. Along with Aesop, the ginger lab cat, they will be helping Professor Cortex and collecting various items including a gold coin and medal as they share stories that have inspired thousands of young imaginations.
Hackney Council is running the three stage challenge at all Hackney Libraries from Monday 16 July to Friday 7 September for all children aged 4 to 11 years. The challenge is simple. Children are encouraged to read six, or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate, or medal for every child who completes this summers challenge – and it’s all free.
Councillor Jonathan McShane, Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Health Social Care and Culture said; “Libraries are free and a great place for children and families to spend time. Why not pop down and find out more about this summers challenge and help your children discover a love of stories and books.”
Story Lab www.story-lab.org.uk gives children a chance to talk about their favourite books and reading experiences with top authors and illustrators.
Children who aren’t already library members will need to join to take part, but membership is easy and can be at one of the boroughs eight libraries, or online at: hackney.gov.uk/libraries-membership-and-joining.htm
Hackney Council will also be holding Reading Challenge Gifting days for all participants of the Reading Challenge:
Saturday 8 September – Hackney Central, Shoreditch, Stamford Hill and Clapton Libraries
Saturday 15 September – Dalston, Homerton and Stoke Newington Libraries.
Week beginning 10 September - Woodberry Down Library
