Immediate Theatre was set up by Jo Carter in 1996 after Hackney’s Agenda 21 consultation, to develop practical ways to tackle economic, social and environmental problems and achieve sustainable development.
From the outset, Immediate’s vision was to work closely with local organisations and community groups, creating theatre which engages people in the process of change. The combination of participatory projects and professional productions was designed to bring theatre practitioners together with the community, to create inspiring work with high artistic standards for specific audiences. The term "immediate" implying "right here" on your doorstep and the "right now" of being responsive to current issues affecting local people.
Immediate creates strong and lasting relationships within communities by workshops and shows in schools, an expanding programme of Estate-based Youth Theatres (currently working on Woodberry Down, Pembury, Shoreditch and Gascoyne estates), and involvement with community carnival and festivals.
In September 2011, Immediate Theatre produced ‘Frenzy’, responding to the summer disturbances, a play following two characters caught up in the rioting and looting. Audience members were asked to come to stage and improvise alternative strategies the characters could have used. ‘Frenzy’ engaged the audience of youth groups, family, friends and local organisations. The process of producing Frenzy’ was featured on BBC1’s ‘Inside Out’ programme in October.
“With Immediate Theatre, I’ve had many experiences that I wouldn’t have had without them. They helped me put things into perspective and I learnt a lot through an anti-discrimination workshop.” 16 year old male, Woodberry Down Estate.
