An exhibition of artists' work charting changes in East London as a result of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games opens on Wednesday 25 January, at the council run Hackney Museum.Art on display includes artistic impressions of the Olympic site, photos through peep holes on Hackney building sites, an abstract piece about workers on the River Lea ,a children's animation film of Matchbox toys returning to their old factory and printed 'Flag -Olympic Rings 'by Hackney artist Christina Mitrentse using appropriated books by members of Hackney community. Artist Jonathan O'Dea said of his work Deconstructed Landscape; "The work is an homage to the skills of the construction workers and their ability to turn something like a brown field site into a space that has great visual interest and beauty" Visitors will also be among the first to see images of the art specially commissioned for the Olympic Park. Work includes Monica Bonvicini's mirrored glass and stainless steel nine metre letters of the word RUN; Hackney artist Martin Richman's ‘One Whirl’ made of recycled glass, and Fantastic Factology: a series of bench plaques each one with a nugget of knowledge to inform and inspire for years to come.
The exhibition is part of Mapping the Change, a unique history project about the people of Hackney and the impact of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on their lives. It is capturing the many voices of Hackney's hugely diverse communities by working with community groups, local artists and individuals to produce photographic, digital media, text, and audio based records of the changes and people's responses to them.
The Council run Hackney Museum is free and visitors can find out about Hackney past and present. There are hands-on activities for all the family; sail the Saxon boat, try on historical costumes, make Victorian matchboxes against the clock. Hackney Museum hosts events and activities throughout the year and during the school holidays.
Most of the work will be on sale once the exhibition is finished. To find out more go to www.hackney.gov.uk/cm-museum.htm or contact
