A new theatre venue for Hackney

A new theatre cafe/bar in a converted warehouse has opened in Hackney Wick, THE YARD will host theatre, opera and dance.

The Yard is the brainchild of a group of theatre directors, led by Jay Miller, with the purpose of offering opportunities to emerging artists in London. The venue offers a safe environment for companies to take artistic risks with free rehearsal space, free performance space. and 51% of the box office in return for a few hours help with the operational management of the building.

The Yard will be open for only one season from 22 July to 29 October. The venue is located opposite the Olympic Park, sitting on the canal and less than 5 minutes from Hackney Wick Station and local bus routes.

The programme combines established theatre makers with some of the best emerging talent, with a specific focus on fusing different performance disciplines, recreating known stories and challenging traditional forms of theatre.

A principle aim of The Yard is to increase transparency and access in theatre, making the building a magnet for audience and artists alike. Ticket prices will start from £4, and not exceed £10.

Practice, an innovative young company renowned for their famous rooftop bar, Frank’s Café, have designed and constructed the 120 seat venue using reclaimed materials from the Olympic Park. The café-bar will host a series of events and concerts that will complement the work programmed in the theatre.

Last Stand and Rethink - Michael Kelland - £6

A duo of contemporary dance pieces by up and coming young choreographer Michael Kelland. Both pieces use web comics as their inspiration. Last Stand is inspired by Winston Rowntree's Stop Normality and Rethink by Bryan North's Dinosaur Comics.

Last Stand

"Towards the end they say, you'll reach the point of no return, and feel it. Time grinds to a halt and the universe shrinks and square metres take on the detail of city maps."

As you near the end what will you remember? What will become important?

Rethink

The games that we played as children inform how we relate to friends and strangers today. What happens when we play these games as adults? What do they reveal of what we've become?

A young actor arrives backstage to play a small part in Hamlet for the first time. After four lines and less than a minute onstage, he exits. Sitting backstage with three other jaded actors who also play minor roles, he is forced to come to terms with not being special.

All Night I Dream… is a new play about the people at the edges of our focus, and how we invariably, imperceptibly, and necessarily fill in their blanks. (And an old woman dies unexpectedly.)

Written and Directed by Sasha Milavic Davies. Artistic Associate at The Yard.
