Description

THE NINE MUSES (PG) 1.30

(Ghana/UK 2010) dir. John Akomfrah 96m. Digital.

Social history has rarely been re-imagined as lyrically as it is in artist John Akomfrah's part documentary, part existential sci-fi film. Inspired by Homer's 'The Odyssey', THE NINE MUSES combines archive footage with amazing views of modern Arctic landscapes to reflect on the experiences of Black and Asian immigrants to the UK over a period of thirty years. The result is a unique and absorbing multi-layered quest for knowledge and identity and a beautiful meditation on migration and memory.

Description

A great local cinema in Dalston. The Rio shows mainstream films and is also responsive to the interests of sections of the community often ignored by mainstream commercial cinema. Examples of this are the annual Turkish and Kurdish film festivals, the Saturday morning Children’s Picture Club, midweek Classic Matinées, the recently introduced Parent and Baby matinées and participation in Spanish and Gay and Lesbian film festivals. While all the other cinemas in Hackney have disappeared or become snooker halls and car auction rooms, the Rio continues to adapt and flourish.
