TAKE THIS WALTZ (15)
(Canada 2011) dir. Sarah Polley. 116m. Digital.
Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman.
"Life has a gap in it... It just does. You don't go crazy trying to fill it." Anyway that's the theory in the second film, after AWAY FROM HER, to be written and directed by actress Sarah Polley. It's an insightful, warm tale of a comfortably married woman who falls for the guy who lives across the street. Romantic but also unafraid of embracing the uncompromisingly honest, TAKE THIS WALTZ is firmly grounded on acute and truthful observations that have much to say about a marriage running out of the will to survive. Cliches are definitely off the menu and with another star performance from Michelle Williams and a music soundtrack that meaningfully incorporates much more than the Leonard Cohen title song, this is a warm, bittersweet, adult and unsentimental portrait of imperfect relationships that could well be the year's truest movie.
A great local cinema in Dalston. The Rio shows mainstream films and is also responsive to the interests of sections of the community often ignored by mainstream commercial cinema. Examples of this are the annual Turkish and Kurdish film festivals, the Saturday morning Children’s Picture Club, midweek Classic Matinées, the recently introduced Parent and Baby matinées and participation in Spanish and Gay and Lesbian film festivals. While all the other cinemas in Hackney have disappeared or become snooker halls and car auction rooms, the Rio continues to adapt and flourish.
